The A To Z Of Michael Mann
Public Enemies sees the return of Michael Mann with a typically stylish and finely-detailed gangster epic . To mark its release we've embarked an alphabetic jaunt through the tropes and traits that make him one of cinema's true auteurs. Welcome to Mikepedia.

Technology

Mann was an early adopter of digital technology for Collateral, but the ultra-realism of Public Enemies offers his most arresting high-def experience so far. This is the 1930s as you’ve never seen them before; "It’s like a different language," says Mann of the switch to HD. With cinematographer Dante Spinotti, he experimented by shooting with HD and 35mm, testing both: “I had planned to use celluloid, but Dante and I went out to the parking lot and did these tests. There was no turning back.” Mann’s no stranger to technical innovation: for Ali he improvised matchbox-sized cameras and mounted them onto Will Smith to get a puncher’s eye view of the bout, in cinema's first blam-cam.

Not a big fan of the Mann, whilst Heat, Collateral, The Insider & Manhunter are all great, Ali, Miami Vice (whichis a terrible, terrible movie) and Public Enemies really aren't all that, they are slow, dull and unfufilling. All well made, but just not all that great. Read More
