Four Oscar nominations are scant reward for one of the true auteurs of his generation, although don’t be surprised to see Public Enemies add to that figure, despite its traditionally Academy-unfriendly early release. The one Mann film to wow the Academy so far has been The Insider, which picked up seven nominations, including two – Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay – for Mann himself. The Mann trophy cabinet is far from threadbare though: the director won Emmys for his TV work on The Jericho Mile and Drug Wars, and a BAFTA for his producing The Aviator. That most prestigious of shiny statuettes, the Empire award, still eludes him.

Not a big fan of the Mann, whilst Heat, Collateral, The Insider & Manhunter are all great, Ali, Miami Vice (whichis a terrible, terrible movie) and Public Enemies really aren't all that, they are slow, dull and unfufilling. All well made, but just not all that great. Read More
