The A To Z Of Michael Mann
Public Enemies sees the return of Michael Mann with a typically stylish and finely-detailed gangster epic . To mark its release we've embarked an alphabetic jaunt through the tropes and traits that make him one of cinema's true auteurs. Welcome to Mikepedia.

The A To Z Of Michael Mann | Jazz Club
The A To Z Of Michael Mann | Jazz Club

Jazz Club

Like Heat’s iconic coffee-shop showdown, Vincent’s visit to Collateral’s modernist jazz club is a classic Mann set-piece, crackling with tension and subtext. Vincent toys with his next victim, a jovial jazz club owner, as the man blusters out an unconvincing tale about meeting Miles Davis. We, and Jamie Foxx’s bewildered cabbie, are left disorientated as false bonhomie turns to blank-eyed menace and the man is offered an impromptu Davis quiz to save his life. The scene combines two of Mann’s loves - jazz and acute detail (Davis’ ‘Spanish Key’ riffs out in the background) – and if there are shades of it in Chigurh’s exchange with No Country’s garage owner, it may not be coincidental: Javier Bardem, of course, is Collateral’s sinister drug lord.

Not a big fan of the Mann, whilst Heat, Collateral, The Insider & Manhunter are all great, Ali, Miami Vice (whichis a terrible, terrible movie) and Public Enemies really aren't all that, they are slow, dull and unfufilling. All well made, but just not all that great. Read More
