The A To Z Of Michael Bay | Explosions

Explosions

There's a rather delightful story about the day that a young Bay, making a Super-8 film about an alien invasion, attached firecrackers to a toy train for a special effects sequence and set fire to his bedroom. The fire brigade were called, and the nascent effects enthusiast was grounded as a result. That didn't dampen his enthusiasm for bombast, however: he has so far never made a film that didn't come wreathed in the smell of cordite. To his credit, most of his explosives work has been spectacular, and practical rather than CG. He seems to delight in destruction, preferably of peaceful targets (a single car chase in The Rock totals a peace-sign strew VW Beetle, a water-bottle stand and a trolley car). And if you think you know his boom-bastic moments, you can test your knowledge here

L: JensonJet I don't know why people have a problem with Bay's films. You know what you're getting, so surely you just avoid them if they're not for you. They're generally excellent popcorn, action flicks. There are some I didn't care for, some I though were rubbish and some I thought were really good. Transformers isn't aimed at my age group, so I watched the first (missed the first twenty minutes, and still have never seen it) and found it watchable enough. I was too old to have grown up with the toys but I didn't find the movie half as offensive as many action films. I actually think Bay have a very good eye for framing shots, angles, etc, and I'm happy to watch a film that's fast-edited. I think he's more than capable of making a calmer, less action orientated movie, but he enjoys making the films he makes, they're successful and millions seem to enjoy his work, so long may it continue. re generally a dumb, throwaway form of entertainment.
