The A To Z Of Martin Scorsese | Bad, Music video

Bad, Music video

Say what you will about Michael Jackson, but his taste in directors is hard to argue with. Martin Scorsese shot the promo for Bad, while John Landis directed not one, but two, videos for the megastar. It was Jackson's producer Quincy Jones who originally asked Scorsese to work on this promo back in 1987, and the director returned with a 16-minute short in which MJ uses dancing to teach Wesley Snipes' hoodlum important life lessons. This is what Kundun would have looked like if the Dalai Lama had a bubble perm and lived in an abandoned subway station. The bleak black-and-white opening in Harlem, inspired by Shirley Clarke's urban doc The Cool World, explodes into a colour dance sequence that's like nothing else the director has put his name to. He captured the artist at his electric peak and even throws in a breakdown that sees MJ defeats Snipes' petty hood using the power of acapella. It all cost $2m - Scorsese's then-wife Barbara oversaw it as producer - and it's worth every penny for its star jumps alone.
