Perhaps unsurprisingly, given his taste in wives, Cameron's women are never damsels in distress. From Ellen Ripley to Neytiri, via housewife Helen Tasker in True Lies and hard-as-nails Lindsey Brigman in The Abyss, James Cameron has a most unHollywood-like habit of giving his female characters actual, y'know, characters. Just edging Ripley for the top spot is Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton), who gets bonus points for having a storyline that takes her from frightened waitress to kick-ass, half-crazy saviour of humanity. Remember that line in Pretty Woman about what the princess does when the prince has rescued her? "She turns around and rescues him right back"? That's a motto that Cameron's heroines seem to live by. Says Gale Anne Hurd, "He felt that just about everything you could explore in a male action hero could be explored better with a woman."

It's kinda funny how Cameron is praised as true autuer, visionary, original, etc. There's not really that much originality in his movies. They're all sequels (Piranha 2, Aliens, Terminator 2), remakes (True Lies), shameles rip-offs from better sci-f writers (Terminator, Avatar) and based-on-a-true-events (Titanic). Only exception from the rule is The Abyss and that was a piece of crap. Read More

As much as I have enjoyed Cameron's films I have to say he is very far from being a genius director. What he is is a pioneer of technology. His efforts have led to some astounding works of cinematography however he didn't direct them. He made the tools to make it all possible.
Having read this feature just to make sure my thinking was on the ball I found that it was even more amplified. Just read what people say about his work (other than: WOW man he rocks my sinking ship! '').Looks great'' comes up alot but never ''the story line blew me away''. Plot holes big enough to hide an imax screen are there and standard relationships regenerated with every outing. We go to see his films to see what new toys are in store not to be mentally stimulated.
A genius director takes what ever tools they can get and creates a master piece. Cameron makes tools and is mind trapped in the vietnam war. A very important man in the world of cinema but not for his directorial prowess. Read More

It's all in there, the HK's from the Terminator movies, the strong female character that comes to save the day, the Power- loader from Aliens, right down to the ending where it looks as if both will go over the edge with someone hanging on for dear life (like the airlock sequence at the end of Aliens) I know the word Genius is thrown around alot these days particularly in Hollywood, but Cameron is the real deal. Can't wait to see Avatar in 3D. I just hope his next pic isn't going to be a long delay. Read More
