The A To Z Of James Cameron
Your guide to the King Of The World

James Cameron divides people. There are those who think he's an arrogant, ruthless, terrorizer of film crews, and those who agree that he's all those things but so talented that it more than makes up for it. Whatever your opinion of the man, he's made at least four films that have redefined cinema and he's out to do the same again with Avatar, his epic love story / Lawrence of Arabia remake set on a distant alien planet. To prepare you for the spectacle of it all, here is a handy guide to Cameron, the man and his movies...

Aliens

While James Cameron was in pre-production on The Terminator he was asked to come up with a sequel to Ridley Scott's haunted-house-in-space film - and after a three-day brainstorm in a locked room he did just that. A huge fan of the original, Cameron rejected the idea of doing anything like a repeat immediately, and instead turned the series into an action/horror hybrid and Ripley from imperilled survivor to kick-ass heroine. Mixing a men-on-a-mission dynamic with some astonishing set pieces (the attack through the ceiling; the first hive encounter; that final showdown), it succeeds as a sequel, an action movie, a horror, a sci-fi, and a character piece. It's small wonder no one to tackle the franchise since has been able to match it.

It's kinda funny how Cameron is praised as true autuer, visionary, original, etc. There's not really that much originality in his movies. They're all sequels (Piranha 2, Aliens, Terminator 2), remakes (True Lies), shameles rip-offs from better sci-f writers (Terminator, Avatar) and based-on-a-true-events (Titanic). Only exception from the rule is The Abyss and that was a piece of crap. Read More

As much as I have enjoyed Cameron's films I have to say he is very far from being a genius director. What he is is a pioneer of technology. His efforts have led to some astounding works of cinematography however he didn't direct them. He made the tools to make it all possible. Having read this feature just to make sure my thinking was on the ball I found that it was even more amplified. Just read what people say about his work (other than: WOW man he rocks my sinking ship! '').Looks great'' comes up alot but never ''the story line blew me away''. Plot holes big enough to hide an imax screen are there and standard relationships regenerated with every outing. We go to see his films to see what new toys are in store not to be mentally stimulated. A genius director takes what ever tools they can get and creates a master piece. Cameron makes tools and is mind trapped in the vietnam war. A very important man in the world of cinema but not for his directorial prowess. Read More

It's all in there, the HK's from the Terminator movies, the strong female character that comes to save the day, the Power- loader from Aliens, right down to the ending where it looks as if both will go over the edge with someone hanging on for dear life (like the airlock sequence at the end of Aliens) I know the word Genius is thrown around alot these days particularly in Hollywood, but Cameron is the real deal. Can't wait to see Avatar in 3D. I just hope his next pic isn't going to be a long delay. Read More
