Remake

You can't get out of bed without tripping over a remake of a smart Scandinavian crime thriller these days, but Nolan, typically, spotted this rich, bloody wellspring long before anyone else. While Contraband, Headhunters, The Killing and The Bridge were all just a twinkle in a script developer's eye, the director was busy putting his imprimatur on Erik Skjoldbjaerg's 1997 thriller in Alaska. Even with 23 hours sunlight a day, which are disorientating filmmaking conditions in any language (apart from Icelandic), Robin Williams remembers Nolan bringing supreme calm to the shoot of his creepy daylight noir. "Your biological clock was screwed", he wrote in Empire, "and no matter what drug you're on, your brain is telling you that it's not right. Chris kept everything in perspective, though." Right from its stylish credit sequence, you knew this would be something different - and so it proved.
