Pennyworth
Nolan's lucky charm, Michael Caine has been an ever-present since his casting as Alfred Pennyworth in Batman Begins. His appearances, from a very brief cameo in Inception to meatier roles in The Dark Knight and The Prestige, have introduced a note of droll detachment in moments of tension, a trick he pulls off with consummate ease from his first appearance on the steps of Bruce Wayne's private jet. "You look very fashionable," he tells Master Wayne, sizing up his long-lost and fairly crusty boss, "Apart from the mud." Since then he's provided moral and practical support for Bruce through two films, as well as coaching Hugh Jackman on magic and Leonardo DiCaprio on the dangers of dreams. We're saying that if you're making Batman, The Prestige and Inception and you need a go-to supporting actor with wit and heart, who better than Caine?
