8 Movie New Year Moments
Don't Do Anything You Might Regret
The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)
Movie New Years' are often a curiously downbeat affairs where our heroes' lives are brought into stark relief, usually over half-drunk martinis or, in Rosemary Woodhouse's case, slabs of raw meat. But for Norville Barnes, ingénue at the heart of the Coens' screwball fantasy, life has got even tougher. His New Year's runs more like a nightmare episode of Jackass. Drunkenness? Check. Baying mob? Check. Teetering on and then plunging from a skyscraper? Check and check. Luckily this is a homage to Frank Capra and not, say, Frank Miller, and Norville never hits the ground, rescued instead by sleight of hand involving a giant clock and a dude with a beard. Still, unless you've got your own guardian angel, it's worth knowing your limits before attempting to scale a skyscraper.
