8 Movie New Year Moments What the movies teach us about New Year's Eve
There are only two certainties on New Year's Eve: at some point you're going to have to pretend to know the words to Auld Lang Syne, and, no matter where you stand, you won't be able to see the fireworks. Other than that, it's all up for grabs during a night that stands to pack all the fizz of the year gone by into an orgy of bubbles, group hugs and eye-watering minicab fares. But, as Hollywood has taught us, things can go wrong. Being the thoughtful folk we are, we've scoured cinema to pick a few basic ground-rules to ensure your evening goes swimmingly. You'll have to find your own cab, though. WORDS PHIL DE SEMLYEN
8 Movie New Year Moments It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over The Apartment (1960)
If you're looking for a fun-filled New Year's you could do worse than emulate Jack Lemmon's lovelorn actuary Bud Baxter, but only if the other options are (1) having your teeth pulled or (2) a night in with Celebrity Big Brother. While the world revels, Bud forlornly packs up his apartment, reflecting on losing his job and watching his dream girl head into the arms of his douchebag boss. Not a great night, really. Luckily, the newly mensch-ified Bud gets his just desserts when the dream girl, Shirley MacLaine's fragile lift operator Fran, runs back to him for a truly life-affirming start to the new year. He's still got to get a job, though.
