Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)

DIRECTOR Rawson Marshall Thurber
STARS Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Alan Tudyk, Stephen Root, Missi Pyle
The greatest sports comedy of all time springs from unpromising origins: it's about, arguably, the most utterly pointless (almost) sport in the world, one that somehow erupted from the playground into the small-time. But it's dodgeball's sheer absurdity and small-time sheen that ultimately gives the movie such firm foundations. That, and a coterie of brilliantly-drawn characters (Stiller's incredibly faux-macho villain, White Goodman, taking the yellow jersey here), magnificent cameos (no matter what happens to Lance Armstrong, they can never take his cameo here away from him), insanely quotable dialogue, surreal situations, and an admirable adherence to the tropes of the genre that make for a truly rousing finale.

ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...)
