Happy Gilmore (1996)

DIRECTOR Dennis Dugan
STARS Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Carl Weathers

The defining Sandler/Dugan joint, Happy Gilmore is the movie that even die-hard Sandler haters have to admit is pretty darn funny. Bringing the world Sandler's soon-to-be-trademarked character traits of extreme anger and surprising loveability, it tells the tale of a wannabe ice hockey pro whose rare talent for blasting pucks a mile into the sky transfers gloriously to the altogether more serene world of golf. Add in an effortlessly hateable antagonist called Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) – "Damn you people. Go back to your shanties!" – a mentor in the shape of Chubbs Peterson, Carl Weathers' one-armed, alligator-fearing coach and Ben Stiller as the world's most despicable nursing home owner… well, behind Caddyshack, you've got the second funniest golf movie of all time – no mean feat.

Should Happy Gilmore be higher or lower on the list?

The Stats
Happy Gilmore (Sandler)
Chubbs Peterson explaining to the easily frustrated Gilmore that it's "all in the hips..."
Aside from remembering that it's all in the hips, putting-wise, the key tactic for Happy is to a) keep cool and b) hit the golf ball like it's a primed grenade. Oh, and ride your gold club like a bucking bronco. Yee haw!

3 RE: What the Hell!?
l largely an excuse for Chaplin to show off his legendary slapstick skills and rubbery physical abilities while poking fun at sports clichés and underdog stories, but it's still more entertaining than most of the films it skewers. ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? 4 RE: Rocky - third place
BASEketball should totally be in here. Okay it's not a real sport, but it is a sport movie. And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...) Read More
