Miracle (2004)

DIRECTOR Gavin O'Connor
STARS Kurt Russell, Noah Emmerich, Patricia Clarkson, Sean McCann, Kenneth Welsh
The sort of film which would be labelled unrealistic if it wasn't based on actual events, Disney's Miracle overcomes a host of familiar genre clichés (the tough-but-fair coach, the underdog triumph, the 'getting better' montage) to produce a crowd-pleasing sports drama. While the straightforward narrative is inevitably predictable (the well-documented nature of this particular event kinda gives the ending away, as does the poster), just knowing that this "miracle on ice" actually happened is stirring enough. Filmmaker Gavin O'Connor realises the on-ice-action superbly (particularly the twenty-minute climax), but this is Kurt Russell's movie and he delivers a commanding performance which culminates in one of the most inspirational teamtalks ever. Because he CAN.

ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...)
