Shaolin Soccer (2001)

DIRECTOR Stephen Chow
STARS Stephen Chow, Man Tat Ng, Wei Zhao
As utterly demented as you might expect a sports movie from the director of Kung Fu Hustle to be, Shaolin Soccer is the way we'd like to see the sport eventually go, if FIFA ever decide to rip up the rulebook and start again with magic. A game that doesn't rely on simple tactics, Shaolin Soccer sees Chow put together a team of super-powered monks (lightning fast goalie, striker with a foot like a traction engine) who give their rivals the runaround, until – in a shockingly prescient look at the New Money era in the Premiership – they come up against unstoppable footballing machine, the subtly-named Team Evil. Packed with invention and charmingly cheap special effects, it's utterly hilarious.

The showdown between Team Shaolin and Team Evil, which deserves to have a Partridge commentary laid over the top. "SHIT!" "DID YOU SEE THAT?"

ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...)
