Whip It! (2009)

DIRECTOR Drew Barrymore
STARS Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Alia Shawkat, Zoe Bell, Juliette Lewis
Roller derby is the sport of queens, a fast-paced, fierce and very funny sport (check out the players' noms de skate and the unconventional uniforms) dominated by the sort of women your mother warned you about. This smart and affectionate teen drama sees young pageant contestant Bliss (Ellen Page) signing up to play for perennial losers the Hurl Scouts and discovering an unguessed-at talent for knocking people on their ass. But while the skating scenes are speedy and effective, it's the bonds forged between the team that linger in the mind, and the hellaciously good cast (Kristen Wiig and Juliette Lewis) that helps Drew Barrymore's directorial debut speed into high gear.

DEFINING MOMENT
The Hurl Scouts gleefully chanting, "We're number two!" after losing their first match. Of course, with only two teams that's no great achievement, but it does encapsulate the spirit of the game rather well.

ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...)
