Cool Runnings (1993)

DIRECTOR Jon Turteltaub
STARS Leon Robinson, Doug E. Doug, Malik Yoba, Rawle D. Lewis, John Candy

Sure, calling Cool Runnings "The true story of the Jamaican bobsleigh team" as the tagline does is more than a little bit generous – for starters, in real life their rivals were not only supportive but one team even lent Jamaica a back-up sled to help them qualify – but Disney's sugar-filled gigglefest is so charming that even the hardest heart would find it hard not to crack a smile watching it. John Candy plays the team's ethically questionable trainer, Irving Blitzer, guiding the three failed runners (and the best go-kart driver in Jamaica) perhaps not to victory, but definitely to undeniable, unforgettable glory – and in so doing turns in yet another of his signature performances, up there with Planes, Trains and Automobiles and Uncle Buck.

THE PLAYERS
Derice Bannock (Robinson), Sanka Coffie (Doug), Junior Bevil (Lewis) and Yul Brenner (Yoba)
DOCUMENTARY?
No.
DEFINING MOMENT
The brash, boorish but ultimately kind-hearted Yul Brenner (Malik Yoba) - N.B. not Yul Brynner - giving shy rich kid Junior Bevil (Rawle D. Lewis) the pep talk of his life: "I see pride! I see power! I see a bad-ass mother who don't take no crap off of nobody!"
KEY TACTICS
Feeling the rhythm, feeling the ride and remembering to kiss your lucky egg.

1 Underdog film
Dodgeball certainly remains one of the classic underdog films, not just for its inspirational value, but its usual comedy, too. And perhaps some of the others could make this list too: http://www.ranker.com/list/best-movies-about-underdogs/ ranker-film Read More

3 RE: What the Hell!?
l largely an excuse for Chaplin to show off his legendary slapstick skills and rubbery physical abilities while poking fun at sports clichés and underdog stories, but it's still more entertaining than most of the films it skewers. ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? 4 RE: Rocky - third place
BASEketball should totally be in here. Okay it's not a real sport, but it is a sport movie. And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...) Read More
