Rollerball (1975)

DIRECTOR Norman Jewison
STARS James Caan, John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck
Dystopias always create interesting sports to keep the unfortunate populace docile. Recently we've had The Hunger Games, which was a bit like Battle Royale, and Stephen King gave us The Running Man, which was a bit like The Most Dangerous Game. But the most dangerous game of them all is Rollerball, a sort of insane mash-up of ice hockey, American football and roller derby, with added motorbikes. The film's individuals-over-collectives stance is a bit right-wing, but James Caan's last-man-standing anti-hero is still a classic of fuck-you defiance. Given that some of the film's societal predictions were kinda prescient, maybe it's surprising we're not playing this yet.

ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...)
