The Fighter (2010)

DIRECTOR David O Russell
STARS Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, Amy Adams, Melissa McMeekin

It's perhaps not very surprising that the real-life Micky Ward became a scrapper. After all, he'd been fighting most of his life with his tough upbringing, family dramas and natural ability to get into punching matches. Wahlberg – a fan and sometime friend of Ward's – spearheaded this biopic of his early boxing years and recruited Bale to play his troubled brother/trainer, Dick Ecklund. The result was seven Oscar nominations and two wins, for Bale and Leo. Russell brought a ragged, authentic feel to the film, which had you rooting for Mickey without ever feeling like you were being manipulated, and Wahlberg was quietly compelling in the lead.

Micky confronts his family - and girlfriend Charlene (Adams) - about Dickey and his next bout. "I'm the one fighting," he says, pointing to them as they stand around the training ring. "Not you, not you and not you..."
KEY TACTICS
One part inspiration (junkie former boxer brother as trainer and How-Not-To guide for life) to two parts frustration (loud mum and sisters) and just a dash of perspiration.

1 Underdog film
Dodgeball certainly remains one of the classic underdog films, not just for its inspirational value, but its usual comedy, too. And perhaps some of the others could make this list too: http://www.ranker.com/list/best-movies-about-underdogs/ ranker-film Read More

3 RE: What the Hell!?
l largely an excuse for Chaplin to show off his legendary slapstick skills and rubbery physical abilities while poking fun at sports clichés and underdog stories, but it's still more entertaining than most of the films it skewers. ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? 4 RE: Rocky - third place
BASEketball should totally be in here. Okay it's not a real sport, but it is a sport movie. And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...) Read More
