The Wrestler (2008)

DIRECTOR Darren Aronofsky
STARS Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood
Robert Rodriguez had already given Mickey Rourke's career a shot in the arm, dragging him out of obscurity for Once Upon A Time In Mexico and Sin City. But it was Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler that gave him a full-blown comeback moment. Hollywood loves an underdog, and Rourke's heartbreaking performance as washed-up former wrestling champ Randy "The Ram" Robinson (he even had his own Nintendo game!) won him a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an Oscar nomination. Aronofsky's portrayal of wrestling's seedy underside and bloodthirsty small-town crowds didn't set well with everyone, but The Ram ultimately made more friends than enemies thanks to its immense heart and endless pathos. It has practically the same ending as Black Swan (minus the ballet and the feathers) and Aronofsky views the two films as companion pieces.

ow exactly does Chaplin, in 1915, skewer films that are very very far from being made and poking fun at sports clichés that do not yet exist? And it's funny as shit wise a pretty damn solid list. (Rocky 2-4 should be included as well, but maybe that's being a bit greedy...)
