Showgirls

Who's responsible?
Director Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas.

Why it's on the list
Whether you see it as All About Eve only with the good bits taken out and a naked Elizabeth Berkley put in, or a yet-to-be recognised classic, Showgirls represents a career graveyard for anyone unlucky enough to be cast in it (Elizabeth Berkley, Kyle MacLachlan, Gina Gershon, we're looking at you). Ignored at the box office, it briefly flourished on DVD, before ending the Nineties claiming the Razzies Worst Picture of the Decade gong - and this was the decade that gave us Batman and Robin.

Redeeming feature
The trash-tastic neon-lit dance scenes have a certain manic energy and, er, the bit with the... nope, that's it really.

What the critics said
"This film is like a shiny, red apple that's rotten to the core -- despite slick direction and a glossy sheen, it reeks of decay"
- James Berardinelli, Reelreviews

I actually liked The Matrix Revolutions. Sure, it is not as good as the first Matrix movie, that was wayyy better, but I do not think it should be here on this list. Also, Spider-Man 3 wasn't bad either, not as good as Spider-Man 2 but that also does not belong here. Instead of The Matrix Revolutions and Spider-Man 3 please add Movie 43 (2013) and Jack and Jill (Adam Sandler Bulls**t) as those are much worse, But for the rest of this list, I pretty much agree. I can think of some movies much more deserving to be on this list. In fact, I am watching one right now (hence my being here). Dead Heat. Check it out some time... And I think Batman Forever was considerably worse than Batman and Robin. At least Batman and Robin knew it was a hokey movie. Batman Forever tries to take itself too seriously. Read More

1) without a doubt Pootie Tang was the worst movie ever it was so bad they could make it a challenge on fear factor. 2) Vanilla Ice s movie Too Cold. Wow no comment it was just dreadful. 3) Mortal Combat 2 the movie. Are you kidding me everything about thismovie was fake and without a doubt bad. The CGI looked like a beginner doing there first PowerPoint presentation. 4) Soul Plane I do agree with the selection just not the place 5) Steppin. OK if step up wasn't bad enough why do an even lower budget knock of the same movie ... Hated It!!! 6) Too Wong Foo. OK WOWthe simple fact Wesley Snipes was in a dress automatically puts this one on the list 7) Robot Jocks. Does anyone remember this movie ? 17 Scary movie?
Posted on Monday December 26, 2011, 15:30 by Alucard_the_last
That film was great. I really liked Van Helsing too. I hated Dream Catcher too but liked it a lot more the second time. What should be on the list is Gummo which is a flat out abomination that should be played over and over again to the inmates on death row so they stop appealing their sentence. Another mega bomb was Spun which is a 'comedy' about meth addiction. Scary Movie 4 was horrible too. Supergirl should be on the list for numerous reasons: Faye Dunaways and Peter O'Toole's worst films. Horrible acting and even worse special effects. Read More

26 Unified Theory of Bad Movies
Posted on Wednesday August 3, 2011, 17:46 by LaurieP
I'm always interested in lists of bad films - and also in reading the comments from those who think the worst of the worst weren't included. I began to wonder why and how people vote the way they do (for bad movies specifically, anything else is overwhelming). I ran across this blog post - very VERY detailed analysis/breakdown. I love the idea of coming up with a Unified Theory of Bad Movies (and honestly, I'm not even a math freak). There were several movies missing off the list, which I would have expected instead of some others (which have their following and some redeeming moments). For example 'Birdemic' - this movie makes 'Plan 9 from Outer Space' look accomplished. You need a truely great understanding of movies to get a movie so totally and utterly wrong. A masterpiece of failure. Also - where are 'Ishtar' and 'Manos: The Hands of Fate'? On other notes: 'Highlander 2' redeeming features: 1. Sean Connery: 'So much for horse and cart' 2. The airline entertainment movie ... This makes about 6 minutes and 58 seconds of 'Highlander 2' watchable. Read More

In fact Superman Returns getting a 5 stars from empire is precisly the reason (and the point in time from when) I no longer trust Empire reviews. greed.  I kept expecting Superman Returns to appear on the list, even got quite 'excited' when it didn't come up early, thinking that it would be quite high and that finally the veil had been lifted from everyone's eyes and they could see it for the utter tripe it was... but no.  Disappointing. my top and remain: Indy IV The Simpsons Star Wars I all three have the same thing in common, namely they made me really angry. In detail: Indy IV starts badly orse en finishes terribly adful film in its own right but the thing that made me angry was the way it pissed over my fond childhood memories. All copies of it should be burned. The Simpsons. Mr Burns was on screen for 30 seconds. They were the only vaguely amusing 30 seconds of the whole film. 82.386% of film takes place outside of springfield so all the funny characters are reduced to vague cameos. The modern day Homer is such an asshole that he is uniquely unsympathetic so you just don't care. Really pathologically unfunny throughout Star Wars the Phantom Menace. Anakin is Jesus!!! Hey don't everyone go blaming Empire, the readers are responsible for this list. Shame on whoever voted for Spider-man 3, its not even the worst super-hero movie ever. Daredevil, x-men origins:wolverine, both fantastic 4's, ghost rider - all worse and they didn't even make the list. Batman and Robin was awful but no-where near the worst film ever made. 50 RE: Arrested Development
Posted on Tuesday February 9, 2010, 12:58 by Cruisecontroller
Personally I don`t beleive Transformers 2 Revenge of the Fallen should be on this list even if it was overlong and sometimes hard to follow the action and story. With hindsight after initially being blown away by it visually I can see it is flawed but it certainly is not one of the worst movies ever made. Nor is Scary Movie which overall is to me a funny spoof of horror movies. Scary Movie 2 however is a differnet matter that was rubbish. Plus Spiderman 3 was maybe overloaded with plot, baddies and just too much in general with some dogey acting from Tobey Maguire when Peter Parker really loses control to Venom but its still exciting and fun to watch and not in my view worthy of being in this list just the weakest of that trilogy. There are far worse memorable films that could and should be on. I just think some people like to bash certain movies because they don`t want to be seen to be following the crowd and want to be controversial with their votes. Read More

Heaven's Gate at number 6? I'm surprised that a) so many people have watched it and b) it got so much vitriol. I really like it, it's way too loooong in places, but the acting is fine and you do actually care about the people and the situation. I guess it's too slow for today's audiences. But 6th worst film ever? Eh, no. Superbabies 2: Baby Geniuses and Karate Dog should be there. I haven't clicked through most of the list as it's taking an age to load each page. Admittedly I should have actually taken part in this poll and wouldn't want anyone else to have been subjected to this overblown, shonky and not even so-bad-it's-good acting/dialogue/special effects so I can only hope that it has either been blocked out by those who watched it or just wasn't seen ( a wise option).   And thankyou Empire for also thinking "What was Thandie Newton doing in 'Norbit'?" 64 RE: Very Controversial Top 50 -- What shouldn't be in it

L: dansator This list is controversial, and I expect a lot of people are annoyed to see films they love in the list. Some films received votes not because they're "bad", but because they're "less good" than their predecessors. The best examples are "Spider-Man 3" and "The Matrix: Revolutions", both great films in their own right, but they fail to live up to the films that went before them. Even and Robin" has its meritsuote]Errr, no it doesn't! Read More

where's the feature gone? I click on the link & get: Not Found We're sorry the requested page could not be found or is no longer available. Edit: Found it, but the link still doesn't work at the top of this thread. Looks like none of my 3 votes counted: 3. Meet the Parents (the least funnny 'comedy' ever made. There's not ONE scene in the entire film that makes you think Teri Polo even i] Stiller, let alone i] him. & why would you go through all that shit for some like that?) 2. Octane. Seriously, watch it. It's one of the most incoherent films ever made. 1. Soul Survivors: The Killer Cut. As above, plus it has the added insult of having Eliza Dushku take a shower with another girl WHILE THEY'RE BOTH FULLY CLOTHED! Read More

I still maintain that my 3 votes for the only movie I have ever walked out of (as a discerning 14 year old), 'Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot' should have at the very least made the list, if not topped it...Some of you lucky people out there have clearly not been subjected to seeing truly appaling film making. L: Dazzler1967 Why did I not listen to Barry Norman's review on Film 85? When you hear, written by Dan O'Bannon, directed by Tobe Hooper, filled with space vampires and the gorgeous Mathilda May, what else would an 18 year old guy want to see in a film? Even Frank Finlay looked like he was reading his script most of the time and couldn't believe what he was saying. If I was ever going to walk out of a film, I should have done it with that. "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is a work of genius in comparison. sp; I'm given to understand her general nakedness gives it a by in the worst films department Read More

What a bizarre and narrowly focused list. Only one film before 1980. Raise The Titanic, yeah a disappointment and a flop but the fourth worst film OF ALL TIME? WTF? Heaven's Gate, which despite being a huge flop is regarded my many critics as being very good in it's four hour version, is NO. SIX! Do people really think that? Prehaps noone bothered to see it..... *HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL Man, I don't know if I hate any movie MORE then I hated this movie! Again, prehaps noone actually saw it. L: KeithM L: jmebaby25 I'm surprised that Revolver didn't make the cut... it was (somehow) even worse than Swept Away. To all those saying that Superman Returns should be on here - look, it wasn't great. Everyone (except for Empire) is aware of that. It's a 3 star film. To say it's one of the 50 worse films ever is just ridiculous. It's well shot, great effects and the cast is solid. The problem is that the script is a re-hash of Superman 1. The plane rescue on it's own instantly prevents it from being in this list because there is without a doubt 50 films worse that it that don't have anything close to that. he film well shot, I'll give it that.  However, the script was utterly dreadful, the characterisations so painfully off (Superman leaving Earth without a word, Lois writing a smear piece when she can only assume that he's dead, Lex making yet another poorly thought out land-grab, Kryptonite not being poisonous, deadly and debilitating, but overcome by a merRead More

L: KeithM L: D_DuMas I can think of far worse films to go on that list. But just for the crack, Blade 3, which wasn't bad, Transformers 2 which wasn't bad. 84 Hmm a 50/50 list
Posted on Friday January 29, 2010, 20:50 by plum bob
TOTALLY agree with some of the entries on the list - the top 10 while proberbly not the worst film of all time that the list says they are, are all absolutly shite movies. However, this list also contains some complete crap that undermines the whole thing: - Transformers 2 - Not a gr8 film, but entertaining, good fun and amazing special effects. - Spiderman 3 - yeh a dissapointment considering how class the first 2 were but still a good action film. Discount the last 20 minutes and you might say it comes close to being as good as the original! - Scary Movie - In bad taste but funny, how the original gets in but the awful 3rd and 4th one does is completely beyond me. Apart from that, this is a fairly good list and it does bring to light some of the biggest travisties in Hollywood. (as a side note, it is hilerious how Empire rated qite a few of these "worst films ever made with 3* Maybe you should write your own list Empire and be honest!) Read More
