The 50 Greatest Video Game Characters
We pay our respects to gaming's pixel-powered superstars
Whether hearty plumber, battleworn grunt or cutesey farmyard animal, the colourful stars of video games have become emblems of their respective eras. Mario, Sonic and their ilk are the De Niros and Bogarts of the gaming world, closer to the hearts of die-hard console-addicts than any Hollywood icon could be. With this in mind, and after much soul-searching, arguing and quiet contemplation, we have painstakingly assembled our list of the greatest gaming characters ever devised. Most will be old friends, some will be new acquaintances but each and every one is a standout - be they cultural icon, inspired innovation or a masterpiece of character design. The rogue's gallery of gaming legends starts here...

The 50 Greatest Videogame Characters
The 50 Greatest Videogame Characters | 50. Ryu Hayabusa
First appeared in: Ninja Gaiden (1988)

There's no other ninja in gaming we'd rather have on our side. Yoshimitsu? Hop off. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Get back to your sewers. Ryu Hayabusa is the only psychotic swordsman we'd want on our team, and it's pretty obvious to see why.

He's a no-holds-barred maniac, hacking, slashing, backflipping, spinning and leaping all over the shop, chopping up swathes of enemies like he was dicing onions. Mid-air. With a scythe. There's also a bit of Wolverine going on, what with the claw-like appendages on his fists, painting the town red time and again with such grace he looks like some sort of bloody ballet dancer. Minus the tutu.

Also, he's not quite human, which also helps, and he welds the awesomely powerful 'dragon sword'. This is a man not to be messed with, and his honour, grace, and iconic image as the superlative gaming ninja, he'll never be forgotten.

Should Ryu Hayabusa be higher on the list?

While looking through this article I have found some excellent choices which I am pleased to see make it onto the list. But I am amused as to how many people are actually complaining about how the majority of their suggestions were not selected. First you have to get it through to your mind that Empire is not a video game based publication. They are experts within films, and give informative reviews that many people enjoy reading every time a new movie is released. This article was most likely created by members of staff who thought that it would be a nice change of pace from their usually business. I will not be surprised that they compiled it with their own personal experience of playing video games and did little next to no research because they were confident about their knowledge. I can guarantee that if an average gamer were given the opportunity to create this list then they would embarrass themselves by putting choices such as Solid Snake, Master Chief and the entire ModernRead More

I created an account for only one reason, and that is to say this: MORE THAN HALF OF THE CHARACTERS ON THIS LIST SHOULDN'T EVEN BE ON IT. By my count, only twenty-one of those listed even belong on the list, and most of them should be lower. The Duke should be higher. Link beats nearly all of them. Garrett should be in the top five, as anyone who has ever played the Thief games would undoubtedly agree. "One" from Gothic should be on there near the bottom. And here's a question: WHERE THE FRICK IS MAGUS? He's at least Numero Dos. As a life-long gamer on every format since Atari 2600, I'm absolutely appalled. Read More

10 care to say this was the most disgusting listing ever
Posted on Sunday July 3, 2011, 05:55 by 1s99f0x
i`ve been playing videogames since 1996,and i care to point out that this listing is the more disoriented list i have ever seen,it is unimaginable that an adult would be capable of doing such a sloppy job, maybe a twelve year old without research would do a better list, there are many examples, but to simply turn down titles like tekken, megaman that is just preposterous, how can someone put solid snake the star from a game that simply brought gaming to another level at 19th place, this guy sure got a lot of nerve to make this list without any research, it`s like he wrote videogame on google and copyed the firsts results at a randomic order, because i really tried to understand his standarts but i cant just get them, this guy probably havent even played any videogame or maybe "it" is just a progam, that would bee reasonable, this list can be labeled as a felony or a sin, no matter, this guy will receive the worst kind of punishiment in hell, i hope with all my heart that this guy Read More

Ok, I have created an account to point out one specific character that is being seriously over looked, I of course talk about..... Ezio Auditore da Firenze. 13 Noble Squad from Halo:Reach--Morrigan from DA:O--Rabbit from Meddle Of Honor
Posted on Wednesday March 2, 2011, 09:04 by Hobokilla
Noble Squad Should Be Up There As A Team! Halo reach had the best campaign i have ever played on a fps. I mean at the end when your all alone... you look up... pick up your DMR and and make your last stand to die as the last human on Reach! And when you finally are taken down its not before you destroy like five elites with the weapons they try to kill you with! Hands down the best ending ever! The other two characters are almost as good but MoH had a horrible multi-player but had a great campaign and Morrigan is a very deep character if you played Dragon Age: Origins and had a romantic relationship with her. P.S i get the feeling most people on this site are ps3 fans but don't let that stop you from finding a great character in one of these games and the only reason i made a profile on this site was to write this. Got to laugh at all the people bitching about this list, and escpecially those saying that it's just a movie magazine and what do they know about games etc. So does that mean that people that watch movies don't play games and vice versa?? If so, and you are a hard-core gamer type, then what are you doing on a movie site! :P Anyways, a list like this always comes down to personal choice, and NO-ONE is ever going to be happy with another persons choice of top 50 (insert subject here). IMHO the list is quite good actually! :D Read More

L: Kase who the hell is going to remember Gordon Freeman, Shoman, The Namelos One is 20 years time?? Mario, Donkey Kong,Sonic etc. all timeless video game classics that we will all remember long after the modern day fads. ou don't play many video games do you? Yeah, those are classic games in the sense that they're really old and their franchises have been nearly bled to death from countless crappy games. This is a list of the best video game characters, not a list of the most recognizable. Mario is a shitty character. He's one dimensional, most of his games are the same storyless dribble, the only exceptions are the Mario RPGs which most people didn't play because it required more thinking than "jump on goomba, don't get hit". They're just simple games created for the simple masses, and that's the only reason they make as much money as they do. Besides, Gordon Freeman is the only character on the list that has had a game come out in the past 10 years. How on earRead More

L: Edgeof666 You know, I've learned something today. British people don't know shit about videogames. I hate to say it, but lists like this ARE popularity contests, and Halflife isn't even one of the top ten franchises of all time, so to give the main character from that game the top spot is sheer folly. You are a moron. You think British people don't know a thing about games based on a list compiled by a FILM magazine. Don't judge an entire nation on a dodgy list made by film buffs. They know all about films and jack shit about games. Read More

Pretty damn good list. Some odd choices but overall interesting. Adorable to see the console kiddies squawk and squeal about the results. Seems like a few younguns are getting taken to school here, and they ain't happy about it. A lot of people seem to be objecting to particular characters appearing in the list simply because they haven't heard of them. Unfortunately, this means you've simply been playing the wrong games: Just because never saw Star Wars, doesn't mean Darth Vader isn't a great character. :D I would've liked to have seen a Pyschonauts character make the list though, and as far as Planescape Torment goes, I'd have picked Morte over The Nameless One. Actually Hurdy, you voted for our best games list, which we ran some time ago. The characters here were all chosen by us. And while it's true that Empire is a film magazine, I can tell you now that some of us (myself included) have probably played more games than many of you have heard of. We wear anoraks of many colours here at Empire. Whether you're upset that many entries are obscure (to you!),  raging that the obvious choices aren't high enough or incensed that every entry isn't from ('insert fanboy game franchise here'), we're very happy with the list we've put together. Sure, we had to leave out some legends but we got to include other, more worthy entrants as a result. If you haven't heard of some of the characters on the list - go out and get acquainted with them! Your gaming lives will be all the richer for it. Read More

It's as good a list as any, in that obviously I disagree with about half of it. But although Gordon would be my No. 2 behind Guybrush, I still can't really complain: it's nice to see him getting some love at the expense of more two dimensional but more famous heroes. However, I am utterly astounded by the lack of Alyx Vance! The single most human, believable, and empathetic videogame character in the history of the medium! I'm currently playing Episode Three for the first time and the big near the beginning, well... I shrieked out loud. Read More

Now the last time I played a game was Heroes of Karn on the Commodore 64 (it came on a cassette. Ask your parents what those are, kids), but it seems to me that there's a certain amount of tribalism going on here. The writers of this list are Empireites who have, through their lives, owned and played extensively on most of the games consoles going (as well, of course, as PCs and arcade games back in the day) and who know their onions. I can assure you from personal unavoidable eavesdropping on the discussions that preceded the creation of this list that no other polls were taken into account, and that the details of this running order were hammered out in house. You may very well accuse my colleagues of being geeky, bloody minded, nostalgic for the entire history of gaming to this point - but those of you accusing them of laziness, lack of knowledge or stupidity are way off base.
