Steven Spielberg
Tom Hanks

Best Film
Saving Private Ryan. Hanks excels as an ordinary man under extraordinary duress, and Spielberg, starting with D-Day, puts him through the ringer - the speech where Hanks reveals his peace-time profession to quell a platoon uprising is the stuff that Oscars should be made of.
Notable Pairings
Saving Private Ryan, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal

What's The Secret Of Their Success?
Perhaps the most surprising thing about the Spielberg-Hanks partnership is that it took so long to happen. Hanks has some of the nervous energy of previous Spielberg alter-ego Richard Dreyfuss but, especially in Saving Private Ryan, combines it with an all-American dignity, wholesomeness and understated heroism that chimes with Spielberg's worldview. Yet Spielberg has done interesting things with the Hanks persona, giving him an obsessive, loser-like quality in Catch Me If You Can - Hanks does his laundry while DiCaprio nails Jennifer Garner - and making him a loveable schlub in The Terminal.

Were They As Good With Anyone Else?
Under Robert Zemeckis' stewardship, Hanks won an Oscar for Forrest Gump and did extraordinary work opposite a volleyball in Cast Away. He has also pulled great rom-com duties with Nora Ephron. But his collaboration with Spielberg is a class apart.
