Martin Scorsese
Robert De Niro

Best Film
Tough one this. Cineastes could burn gallons of midnight oil debating which of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and GoodFellas is the greatest, but we're plumping for Raging Bull for the brutal simplicity of a man driven to destruction by the same forces that made him great. Scorsese coaxed a tour de force, superlative-exhausting, Oscar-winning Jake La Motta out of De Niro.
Notable Pairings
Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, GoodFellas

What's The Secret Of Their Success?
During their '70s collaborations, Scorsese and De Niro shared many things: a commitment to improvisation, a dedication to exploring the dark side of the male psyche, and some pretty serious troubles of their own. The films they made together were a form of catharsis then, fuelling them with intensity that's stood the test of time and then some.

Were They As Good With Anyone Else?
Scorsese is forging a similarly auspicious relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio, although without the brute-edged intensity of his earlier works. De Niro, with the except of some recent duds, has been consistently excellent throughout his career while rarely matching those Scorsese highs.
