Denzel Washington

Best Film
Malcolm X. Though it baited controversy from all sides, the more time passes, the better Malcolm X becomes, with Washington's expertly delivered role impressing more and more with each viewing.
Notable Pairings
Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X, The Inside Man

What's The Secret Of Their Success?
There's a great sense of trust and friendship between these two - Lee is keen to let his actors improvise once they're in character, and Washington is great at just that. What's more, besides both being aware of each other's great talents, they shared a similar attitude towards black history and culture in the US - and, of course, this is none more obviously shown than Malcolm X, the role that really set Denzel apart from his peers.

Were They As Good With Anyone Else?
In Lee's case, not so much. His finest work was before Denzel appeared in his life, in his breakout piece, Do The Right Thing in 1989, but since then Lee's films haven't packed the same punch. Denzel, however, has been making the likes of The Pelican Brief, Training Day and American Gangster, as well as, um, The Taking Of Pelham 123.
