There have been many great posters this year – here are 50 of them, to get you started – but there have also been many terrible posters too. From characterless character banners to good ol’ fashioned Photoshop cock-ups, quite a few one-sheets have got the ignominious one star from Empire. Here are a few of our ‘favourites’.

Learning the grand total of absolutely nothing from the mistakes made by X-Men: First Class’s poster design team – the horror, the horror – The Stath gets Jenny From The Block on his jacket, and it looks horrible. If Jennifer Lopez wasn’t ghosting through his lapel, this would be a genuinely decent poster. Alas, ‘twas not to be.

2 Font choice
The big trend I've noticed (not just this year) is the over-reliance on the Bank Gothic font to make movie titles look 'slick' and 'edgy'. More

3 Fully Intended?
I recall the middle poster for Heat from hoardings. I thought it was meant to be terrible. Isn't that part of the joke? Really terrible by design. More

Anton Yelchin's poster looks funny, as does the Gangster Squad one-is that a gay American Simon Pegg? And Gerard Butler looks like he's crossed himself with Cumberbatch and Jimmy Carr : ) More

The Paranoia poster looks like a film I'd go see but unfortunately missed because now the latest supernatural teen romance flick is taking its place. More
