The Silence Of The Lambs (1991) Jonathan Demme gurneys up Anthony Hopkins' Chianti-loving mass killer Hannibal Lecter. Slicing and chopping his way into Empire's Great Movie Characters top ten, Lecter won Hopkins his only Oscar to date. Demme originally had Sean Connery in mind for the role but picked Hopkins partly for his performance as Dr. Treves in The Elephant man. "But Treves was a good man..." questioned Hopkins when he heard this. "So is Lecter", replied Demme, "he's just trapped in an insane mind".
