The Matrix (1999) Bullet time is born on the set of The Matrix. SFX guru John Gaeta, one-time protégé of Douglas Trumbull, also drew inspiration from the music videos of Michel Gondry and Otomo Katsuhiro's Akira to create revolutionary new ways for Keanu Reeves' Neo to kick agent ass. "Our technique was different", Gaeta explained, "because we built it to move around objects that were themselves in motion, and we were also able to create slow-motion events that 'virtual cameras' could move around".
