Alien (1979) H. R. Giger and a member of his team put the finishing touches on the Space Jockey during Alien's Shepperton shoot. The Swiss designer was dubbed 'Dracula' on set thanks to his black wardrobe and airlock-cool demeanour, even as a summer heatwave nudged the thermostat towards three figures. His supersized spaceman was nearly cut from the film by 20th Century Fox, who argued that it served no purpose in the plot and was too expensive, but Ridley Scott fought to keep it. Guess who was proved right.
