After four years away from the small screen, New York's fantastic foursome are finally back for one more outing. The show's producers had hoped to make Sex And The City: The Movie three years ago, but scheduling problems forced them to put the project on the backburner. According to producer and star Sarah Jessica Parker, however, that delay has proved a real boon.
"I can tell you that Michael Patrick (King, the director) has been very wise in crafting this version of the movie compared to the script we had three years back," she says on the New York set. "A nice amount of time has passed, and the women have changed, and the city has changed. As you get older, you make different decisions."
Parker's character, sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw, is now a successful book writer, employing her own assistant, played by Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson, and while the four main women have seen major shifts in their lives, several long-running stories from the TV series are finally tied up.
"Obviously we're really excited by the film, but it seems that the fans are too," continues Parker. "There's a lot of affection for these characters because they are archetypal, and they've always been that way. That's important because it allows women to connect with one character or another at different times. Also, they are all facets of a person - there's a side that's demonstrative and confident, like Samantha, then there's the dreamy romantic, Charlotte, and then the Miranda character, who's very cerebral and pragmatic!"
She stops and smiles. "Plus, the fashion's not bad either!"
