Staggeringly, this extraordinary piece of World War II history had never been made into a movie before Bryan Singer's interest was piqued. It tells the story of Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise), who plotted to assassinate Adolf Hitler.
Like All The President's Men, Thirteen Days and Day Of The Jackal, Singer, re-united with Usual Suspects scripter Christopher McQuarrie, is looking to create a mesmerising thriller. Helpfully, the tale comes ready-wrapped in paranoia, as the conspirators debate about who they can and can't trust. "The first half of the film explains who these guys were and what they'd have to go through to assassinate Hitler," explains McQuarrie. "The second half concerns the day of the assassination itself."
"Singer is dedicated to making it as real and unclichéd as possible," says Kenneth Branagh (who plays conspirator Henning von Tresckow). "It is also full of action."
