The 25 Most Exciting Movies Of 2008: Get Smart

Get Smart
Interview with director Peter Segal

Pedigree: Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, The Rock and Borat's Ken Davitian! Estimated budget: $70 million. Predicted box office: $100 million (US gross), $150 million (worldwide).

In his next bid for a crossover hit, Steve Carell plays klutzy spy Maxwell Smart, whose show was once must-see TV in the US. And in a post-rebooted-007 world, Smart's slapstick capers are up for a whole new audience to discover. Indeed, with new recruit Agent 23 (The Rock), Anne Hathaway as empowered sidekick Agent 99 and Bill Murray cameoing as Agent 13, this might come as a pleasant surprise even to fans of the original.

"Steve and I had to add a little bit of our own freshness to it," says director Peter Segal. "We looked to the scope of the picture and the action to complement the humour, the characters and the situations that people remembered. I think we found our own tone."
