The 2012 Oscar Injustices
The nominees who should-have-been at the 84th Academy Awards

OK, now that the excitement over the actual nominations is dying down a little, let’s talk about the holes in the list. Who should have been there and isn’t? Who was robbed or denied by the voters this year? Now of course we know that not everyone can get a place, and much as we love Fast Five, some cherished nominations were never going to happen, but it’s still fun to consider the Oscars that might have been. We’ve profiled some of the most glaring omissions and possible candidates here – have a read and see who you would add...

The 2012 Oscar Injustices | Michael Fassbender for Best Actor Michael Fassbender for Best Actor

Movie: Shame

The man behind the year’s big ‘Ooooh-matron’ moments, Michael Fassbender was extremely unlucky not to pick up an Oscar nomination for Shame. His performance as Brandon Sullivan, a character whose fractured sexual psyche leads him into some of the most intense movie moments since, well, Hunger, was the kind that normally has the Academy in raptures (see also: Midnight Cowboy and Last Tango In Paris). Sadly not this time. Possibly he's too young for the Academy, which has a terrible record when it comes to awarding lead actors under 40, or possibly he hasn't quite broken through in the US yet. Still, if he keeps producing work of this standard, and maybe keeps at least some of his clothes on next time so the male voters don't get an inferiority complex, he should take home the prize in the near future.

1 Great Feature
Posted on Thursday February 2, 2012, 04:54 by Mr. Anderson
Have to agree with your list 100% The animation category baffles me the most. I genuinely thought that Tin Tin and Arthur Christmas were the best two animated features this year but not a nod between them? Plus, I genuinely thought that Warrior was a better film than The Fighter. If you took Christian Bale's performance out of The Fighter would it have been nominated at all? I Found Warrior more dramatic and far more powerful with better all-round performances from Nolte, Hardy & Edgerton. Biggest surprise for myself and most others is the total snub for Drive, which was pure cinema art for me and completely mesmerizing with Gosling, Mulligan & Brooks all fantastic. Big shout this year also for 50/50 & Source Code which were brilliant as well. The last thing that baffles me about the oscars this year though has to be the inclusion of Melissa McCarthy for Bridesmaids, which I did think was the best comedy of the year and so her inclusion is fair enough. But where then wasRead More

2 Honestly!!
Posted on Wednesday February 1, 2012, 14:16 by Carcrash
I honestly don't get the love that Ryan Gosling and Drive is getting as a movie and think both being omitted for Oscars recognition was spot on. What a boring movie with average performances especially Gosling who just mumbles his way through! It's getting far too much hype generated by so called movie critics who are all jumping on the bandwagon by saying how cool it is. Worst film of 2011 by a long stretch...like the soundtrack though Read More

Can't beleive Drive was snubbed so badly. One question on the list. No. 15 Arriety - It hasn't had a release in the US yet (I live here and am waiting excitedly for it. So does it even qualify for this years Oscars? Read More

5 Best Costume omission
Posted on Monday January 30, 2012, 19:34 by dayboy76
I was pleased to see Stuart Craig finally getting an Oscar nom for his brilliant production design/Art Direction on the Harry Potter films, but I would like to have seen its costumer designer, Jany Temime, get some recognition too. While she might have just dressed the kids in jeans and hoodies, from The Prisoner of Azkaban onwards she was also responsible for styling the adult witches and wizards of J.K. Rowling's universe, doing a fantastic job of creating some very unique and imaginative fashions that perfectly complemented the magical world. Read More

6 Oscars count for shit!!!
Posted on Monday January 30, 2012, 09:09 by dannyfletch
The Oscars are ran by American snobs who often like to choose their own films over other, much better ones! Great films like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Drive, The Guard, Kill List and Tyrannosaur get criminally ignored and mediocre American trash like The Help sweep up! It's a big Joke! Read More

The difference between these Oscars and those that have come before is that, while we've had decades of getting used to the fact that the best movies/performers seldom win, we're now faced with the prospect of many of them not even being nominated. Read More

10 Finally some common sense!
Posted on Sunday January 29, 2012, 11:29 by losthighway
Colman, Fassbender, Spielberg... Perhaps they realised that the films they acted in/made just were not that good and so actually didn't listen to the gushing comments that were heaped upon Tyrnannosaur (one of the worst films of last year!), Shame (OK, not great) and War Horse (Spielberg hasn't made a decent film since Schindler's List!). Swinton, Dunst and The Skin I Live In... genuinely surprised! Dunst/Melancholia were two of the major highlights of 2011. The Skin I Live In was the best foreign film of 2011. Swinton was cold and brilliant in Kevin. Read More

11 RE: oh!

L: JonathanMardukas Reading this Feature makes me want to totally ignore watching the Awards this year. I probably will watch highlights the next night but nothing can get me excited to stay up now that Fassbender, Gosling and Drive /Shame as a whole have been ignored, not to mention many others. The Committee seem to be so out of touch it is making the whole event pointless. The Baftas has just been upgraded to the Awards to watch. Oh and Empire's of course. afta's in my house always play first hand to the Oscars, the amount of bad decisions over the years on their awarding of incorrect or inferior choices is overwhelming, Bafta's feel like an award's ceremony that values the art of film making. 12 ???oscars, its rather strange
Posted on Friday January 27, 2012, 22:43 by studog888
why have the oscars ignored micheal shannon, micheal fassbender, ryan gosling, tilda swinton, almodovar, lars von trier and the swedish fella who directed tinker tailor???? it seems to go for the usual scorcese, speilberg and usually the coens, its getting to predictable and unexciting, the baftas are much better Read More

16 Kind of stupid
Posted on Thursday January 26, 2012, 22:52 by sunbear67
I don't think you understand some things. You thought that 4 of the actresses were snubbed, but by saying that, then it means that you think that they should have all been included. This would mean kicking out all of the other actresses including Michelle Williams and Maybe even Meryl Streep. Then you probably would have said they were snubbed. Think first. Read More

17 HP7 Part 2
Posted on Thursday January 26, 2012, 19:38 by EoghanWallace
It would have been nice to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 nominated for Best Picture. It was never going to win, but it would have been a wonderful tribute to a franchise that has been part of the collective psyche for a decade, rather like the Return of the King effect. Plus Alan Rickman's turn as Snape deserved a Best Supporting Actor nod. He may have only been on screen for a limited period but his death and subsequent memories were the most moving and most well-acted scenes in the whole film. Will the Academy please give Hans Gruber an Oscar for god sake! Read More

19 Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Posted on Thursday January 26, 2012, 18:18 by fishface95
TTSS got hugely overlooked in best picture, not to mention Tyrannosaur, a films far more deserving of awards than The Help and INcredibly Loud and Extremely Close. PS Tintin undoubtedly had a lot of brilliant and dedicated art in it, but we can't nominate that for animation, then have Andy Serkis for best actor, which by the way would have been deserved and interesting- obviously an extremely dedicated and succesful performance.
