The Shawshank Redemption
The 10 Greatest Movie Bromances
The Shawshank Redemption

The Lovers: Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) and Ellis 'Red' Redding (Morgan Freeman)

Frank Darabont himself says that he loves Shawshank because it's a beautiful exploration of male friendship. And that's absolutely right, for the bromance between Andy and Red is moving, extraordinarily nuanced and wonderfully realised. Unlike many of the other entries on our chart, there are no romantic or homoerotic undertones to their friendship, even if it is ultimately more akin to a marriage. Instead, here are two men who quickly form a strong bond of mutual affection, with each becoming the other's rock for around 30 years. This is the sort of friendship – strong, unyielding, sometimes unspoken – that every guy wishes he could have.

Most Bromantic Moment: The unbearably moving climax, when a freshly-freed Red heads towards his friend. "I hope I can cross the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope." Note how Red's hat flies off his head into the surf as he walks along the beach toward Andy – and he doesn't even care.

Who's The Beard? With Andy's wife long dead and Red unattached, there is no beard. These two dudes live for each other.

6 Your going the wrong way!

It has to be John Candy (Del Griffiths)and Steve Martin (Neal Page) in 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles'. Especially the scene where they wake up in bed and Del (Griffiths) has his arm wrapped around Neal (Page) and his other hand is wedged between two pillows. These two were absolutely great in their hey day and this film really captured them both at the right time of their careers, John Candy was one of my favourite comedy actors when i was growing up and i doubt these two have ever made a better film than this. Most of those are not even Bromances! Just because there a 2 guys in a movie together, it doesn't make it a Bromance... For instance the Rush Hour movies are Bromances. Top Gun is not a Bromance, and if it was, it would be Goose and Maverick; not Iceman and Maverick. But it's not. Read More

Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins. 'but i can carry you.' Come on nothing say true love like those two. though to be honest the you could have all of the fellowship in one big orgy romance because they all love each other dearly. When Frodo is reunited with the gang at Minas Tirith. Read More

28 Mann love
Posted on Friday April 17, 2009, 11:52 by inkedbeatnik
It should be noted as well that Michael Mann is king of orchestrating the bromance. Heat: Neil McCauley abandons his girlfriend so he can play guns/cops n robbers with Vincent Hanna, he of three wives. In Collateral Vincent takes Max for a spot of jazz and to a club -two dates in one night! then you have crocket and tubbs and their matching dodgy facial hair Read More

29 Jay and Silent Bob?

I'd have gone for Dante and Randall myself. Remember the jail cell scene from Clerks II? We nearly had a serious film on our hands! See also: Withnail &, erm, I, The Dude & Walter, or the bromantic fourway of Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern in Stand By Me. Read More

POTC - Will Turner and Jack Sparrow. So much more chemistry between those two than WT and Elizabeth, to the degree that TPTB had to come up with that lame triangle in the second two parts to try and cover the blatent bromanc-iness incase people went "eap! They be boys bromancing!" Read More

36 What about the most EPIC bromance?
Posted on Friday April 17, 2009, 09:03 by inkedbeatnik
Yes, thats right -Sam and Frodo. I willed them to ditch canon and be together, but no. We just get a lot of hobbits jumping on Frodos bed while Gandalf watches - creepy smirk and all. Poor Samwise - forced into a sham of marriage whilst his true love abandons him. After all Frodo put him through, the least he should have got was a kiss Read More
