What's Hollywood Favourite Sandwich?

Posted on Wednesday November 2, 2011, 17:09 by Phil de Semlyen in Empire States

What's Hollywood Favourite Sandwich?

November 3 marks International Sandwich Day! Yes, we know what you're thinking: it's a big old marketing ploy concocted by the sinister Condiment-Industrial Complex to shift a few jars of pickle. But no. We think of it as a time for celebration and, next to 'Move Like A Ninja Day' and 'Hug A Hippo Day', it's one of our favourite little-known days of the year.

The main criterion for treasuring ISD is that unlike, say, 'Talk Like A Pirate Day', it doesn't involve doing anything you probably wouldn't be doing anyway (ie eating a tasty sandwich) - although admittedly since they merged 'Talk Like A Pirate Day' with 'Talk A Bit Like You're From The West Country Day', that one got pretty straightforward too.

So how to celebrate? Well, as keen Empire webchatters will know, we've all been confusing delighting Hollywood stars with seemingly random enquiries into their favourite bread spreads for some time now. We don't know why it started exactly, except that they're at lunchtime and everyone's hungry. We'd also like to think it's because movies are filled to the basket brim with delicious bun fun. Look at Harry and Sally tucking into a pair of pastrami classics in Katz Deli (and don't forget that he loves the way she takes "an hour and a half to order a sandwich") and Gary Busey's fierce devotion to meatball sandwiches in Point Break. Then there's Polanski's The Ghost - half the film (literally) without the sandwich metaphors - or, more ickily, Tom Cruise's encounter with a six-month old BLT in Minority Report. The 'B' almost certainly standing for 'botulism'.

So here for fans of the humble - and not so humble - sandwich, whether white, wholemeal or seeded, is a menu of Hollywood's orders.

Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Webchat
kellyjo562: For everyone – what is your favorite type of sandwich?

Kieran Culkin: BLT, no mayo.
Edgar Wright: I like a cheese and jam sandwich. Controversial! Raspberry jam and Red Leicester.
Brandon Routh: Wow... I like roast beef with like a cranberry chutney. And somekind of cheese, like a... white cheese. Brie! Toasted bread.

The Dolph Lundgren Webchat
JediBobster says: Dolph, I'm sat eating my lunch and find myself wondering, what is Dolph Lundgren's favourite sandwich?
I suppose it would be tuna salad with lettuce, tomato, cheese and some mustard on wheat bread, with a dash of Tabasco. Boring as hell.

Arrested Development Webchat
COME ON!!! says: What's your favourite sandwich, guys?

Mitch Hurwitz : This is gonna sound really gay, but it's me and Will and Amy.
Will Arnett: Why does that sound gay? It only sounds gay if you're just thinking about me. You're making it gay!
Mitch Hurwitz : It sounds gay because we're the ones making all the noise! To the casual eavesdropper, it's just two men having sex.
Will Arnett: Can I ask you a question? Am I the meat?
Mitch Hurwitz : You're the meat and as we both know, often the condiment.

Ethan Coen Webchat
Mrs. Fink says: Ethan, I have to know... what's your favourite sandwich?
Oh. Well, OK, prosciutto and mozzarella, a little arugula, oil and vinegar on it. Are you offering?

Bradley Cooper Webchat Transcript
RichMahogany says: What's your favourite sandwich?
BLT. But then I make everything into a sandwich.

Channing Tatum And Jamie Bell Webchat
FoodieFilm says: Big question! What are your favourite sandwiches?

Jamie Bell: BLT is taking the biscuit, but I also like egg salad - but a lot of people don't, I know.
Channing Tatum: Grilled cheese. And the bacon sandwich - this is something I've learned from Britain, the bacon sandwich. We do not have them in America and they are unbelievably awesome. Incredibly bad for you, but awesome. I'm not kidding, I walked in and Jamie and this huge bacon sandwich. I was like, "What's this?" He says it's a bacon sandwich, and I'm like, "Tell me everything!" This is why this question is always asked, I guess...
Jamie Bell: America has crappy bacon, you see.

Submarine Webchat
OrangeAid says: What's your favourite sandwich, guys?

Richard Ayoade: Meat sandwich.
Craig Roberts: The Egg bloomer from Pret.
Yasmin Paige: Mine is the pole-lined tuna from Pret. I assume it is important to have it pole-lined.

Duncan Jones Webchat
kathen says: Not sure if it hasn't already came up but, still, what's your favourite sandwich?
That's a tricky one. I think a good baguette filled with salami, gruyère cheese, bit of ham, some red onion, touch of mustard... I'm getting hungry now.

Danny McBride Webchat
FoodFan1123 says: What's your favourite sandwich?
A bacon butty smothered in brown sauce.

Insidious Webchat
RamonaBarcelona says: What's your favourite sandwich?

James Wan: I don't like sandwiches.
Leigh Whannell: Okay - I have a gluten allergy so I can't eat sandwiches anymore.
James Wan: Only when I'm really hungry. But if someone held a gun to my head, I would say tuna sandwich or vege sandwich. Is panini or focaccia considered sandwiches? If they are, then I love those.
Leigh Whannell: I used to love tuna salad sandwiches. Now I would say a roasted chicken sandwich in gluten-free bread. Yay. Appetising, huh?

Joe Wright Webchat
SmasheringSmash says: What, above all other sandwiches, is your favourite sandwich?
I'm very partial to the classic cheese and pickle. Every day on set, at the end of shooting, my assistant brings me a cheese and pickle. That's true.

Joe Cornish Webchat
Quentin_Cappucino says: I'm eating a sandwich. Joe, what's your favourite sandwich?
I like some paperclips, a bit of tyre and sand on granary.

Aidan Gillen Webchat
SarahLouise81 says: Oh, and what's your favourite sandwich? I thought I may as well ask ;)
Lettuce and tomato, don't let the lettuce touch the tomato, put a bit of salt on it but only on the tomato, no butter, I'm not sure what kind of bread I want today, and some crisps on the side.

Paul Feig And Chris O’Dowd Webchat
Quentin_Cappucino says: I am eating a sandwich and wondering what is your favourite sandwich?

Chris: A shit sandwich!
Paul: I eat those all the time!
Paul: I'm gluten free, so I can't eat sandwiches... thanks so much for bringing it up! *silently weeping, eyeing plate of sandwiches next to Chris*

David Schwimmer Webchat
FilmFood says: David, big question - what's your favourite sandwich?
It would be just a really good medium-rare cheeseburger with mustard, tomato, lettuce and onion. I don't know if that qualifies as a sandwich in this country, so if not turkey and swiss.

Gary Oldman
Welsh_Evs says: What’s your favourite sandwich Gary...are you partial to an egg roll like Drexl in True Romance?
I like a cheese and pickle. Nice cheese and pickle on a real old-fashioned bread. Ploughman's lunch.

Nicolas Winding Refn
Ants says: What's your favorite sandwich?
Ham and cheese.

Melissa George
Toadie says: What’s your favourite sandwich?
Buffalo Mozzarella with tomato and basil. I just had it, actually.

Paddy Considine

kathen: Favourite sandwich? Because it's lunchtime.
I like coronation chicken, brown bread.

Lee Child
Helen: What’s your favourite sandwich?
Pret’s Chicken and bacon.

So there you have it, and I guess it would rude not to ask - what's your favourite sandwich?

I never thought I'd say this. But I agree with Channing Tatum. Bacon Sandwiches are the best things... well ever.

Sandwiches may be my favourite food, but I try to restrain myself to one per week. Today is the day, it would seem. My favourite is tuna salad, but I'll be getting mozzarella, tomato and pesto for lunch.

I'm the same as the LEGEND that is Gary Oldman...the Ploughman & the Cheese & Pickle..I LOVE that I'm on the same level as the Oldman :D nothing could be better right now! brilliant!! I'm vegetarian so my sandwich choices are rather limited. But I have made some crazy sandwiches in my time...from such interesting combinations..it's fun when you mix it up..vege style :)

I'm surprised that no-one has thrown the Chip Butty or Steak Sandwich out there...

Beef, rocket and tomato for me!

If the bacon butty's already out there surely we have to mention the sausage barm? On a weekend morning with a cup of tea.

Personal fave: homemade egg mayo (so it's still warm) with crisped-up-bacon from m&s. YUM

Some of my favourites:
1. Roast ham, apple and rosemary chutney, lettuce, tomato, mustard and cheddar cheese on toasted focaccia (from Pickles & Potter in Leeds)
2. Pastrami, pork loin, double gloucester, toasted on granery
3. Classic bacon and fried egg on good quality, thick, white farmhouse loaf with ketchup
Where is sandwiches house?

The chicken and bacon sandwiches from M&S; malted bread, peppered mayo (or something like that) lettuce, cucumber and then obviously the chicken and bacon. ooo it's making me hungry just thinking about it

Best sandwich ever is from the pub near my work. Hot Roast Beef Sandwich. Toasted bread, tender roast beef with horseradish, served in a dish with chips covered in gravy. I look forward to it every Thursday!
