New Jack City - A First Look At 24 Season 8
Posted on Friday January 15, 2010, 17:38 by Nick de Semlyen in Small Screen
May 20, 2015. That is the date on which the events of 24: Season 8 occur, the real-time thriller serial’s timeline having gradually skipped ahead of the real world’s. So with the action moving to New York* and CTU getting resurrected in a glitzy new HQ, are we in for thrills of a more sci-fi nature than usual? Well, yes and no… Empire was among a select few invited to attend yesterday’s premiere of the Season 8 premiere, at the Skirball Center in New York’s Greenwich Village. In a private screening room (security grading: blue), we were handed a bottle of special 24 water with Jack Bauer’s face on the label (not only refreshing, but handy for bludgeoning terrorists with in close-combat situations) and seated next to the show’s creators and stars. A slideshow of the actors’ faces rotated by on the screen before the episode began, which prompted some of them (including Annie Wersching and Freddie Prinze Jr) to pose for grinning camera-phone photos of themselves in front of their own giant visages. Kiefer Sutherland, who appeared on David Letterman’s show earlier this week in a natty dress, was sadly in his own clothes, a suit and waistcoat, this time. Then a familiar flickering yellow double-digit number appeared on-screen, a just-as-familiar voice growled, “The following events take place between 4pm and 5pm”, and we were plunged straight into some white-knuckle action, involving an informer named Victor (who, we later learn, was involved with the Salazar brothers from Season 3), being hunted by scuzzy Eastern European types. It seems Victor has an inside lead on an imminent assassination attempt on Middle Eastern President Hassan (Slumdog Millionaire’s Anil Kapoor), and needs to get his information to Jack Bauer stat. Those who have been with the show since the start may now be experiencing déjà vu, since Season 1 began in much the same way, with Bauer receiving intel about a hit on President Palmer. Making it even more of an eerie callback, turns out Hassan’s wife (Necar Zadegan) is a bit of a Sherry Palmer type, a cold fish who seems bent on manipulating her powerful husband. Are the writers rehashing a set-up, or cunningly setting us up for a major twisteroo? Time will tell. If that element seems familiar, it’s all fresh at CTU. Seems the Counter-Terrorism Unit has finally woken up to the fact its LA bureau was as secure as a distressed shed, since they’ve stepped up security in a major way. The new, uber-high-tech headquarters is located deep underneath Roosevelt Island, accessible only by tunnel, while alert guards with submachine guns stand sentry at each entrance, an upgrade from the red-shirted simpletons from seasons past. Outside, it’s a fortress; inside, a glossy spaceship, all gleaming glass, ginormous monitors and futuristic computer consoles. So futuristic, in fact, that fan-favourite keyboard-jockey Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) is out of her depth for once, losing a verbal duel over face-recognition software with new analyst Dana Walsh (Katee Sackhoff, hot off Battlestar Galactica). Meanwhile, there’s more future-tech in the shape of drones, operated by smartass surveillance dude Arlo Glass (John Boyd), which soar over the New York streets hunting for trouble. While it’s got all that, CTU ain’t got Jack. Bauer’s retired, out of the game, a man at peace at last. In fact, the first time we see him, he’s enjoying that most elusive of pleasures: sleep. That doesn’t last long, as he’s poked back into wakefulness by a cuddly polar bear toy, wielded by his equally cute granddaughter. And the retirement thing doesn’t last long either. By about the midway mark of this episode, he’s running down 18th Street with a handgun, about to get into a three-way firefight with NYPD and Uzi-toting terrorists. Oh, and remember that bit from the opening of Season 2 where Jack cut a perp’s head off with a hacksaw? There’s a moment here, involving an improvised weapon, which matches that for sheer, vicious badassery. So high-tech wizardry and low-tech brutality, side by side… in other words, business as usual for 24. It’s too early to tell where all the threads are leading, or whether the writers will be able to take Jack Bauer — and us — to new and exciting places. But the New York setting feels fresh (though virtually all of the season was filmed in Los Angeles) and there are some thrilling things promised: the return of lunatic ex-President Logan (Gregory Itzin), Renee Walker (Wersching) going spectacularly off the rails, and the biggest explosion in the history of the show. Look out for more reports here soon. Oh, and if you’re playing the 24 Drinking Game, prepare to sink two shots: Chloe and Jack get one “Dammit!” apiece. 24 Season 8 begins on Sky 1 on January 24. *Curiously, 24 has followed the exact same trajectory of fellow Fox franchise Die Hard, starting in LA and moving to New York via Washington DC. If it continues following this formula, Season 9 will return to DC and have a shit bit with Kevin Smith.

And who doesn't want to see a smackdown between Chloe and Starbuck?! Although, I have to say that while I loved series one and series 5, I genuinely can't remember what happened in a single other series, except the couger bit and the line "I'm going to need a hacksaw". No idea who the Salazar brothers were. They sound nefarious.
Oh, and loving the small screen section! Gone are the snobby days of thinking that only films warrent in-depth discussion! |

the first half of season 7 was excellent. but the second half went downhill. season 6 wasn't great. season 3-4 was the peak. after that it was the same each season. will this stop me from watching? F**K NO. i could watch Jack Bauer kick ass for the rest of my life. |

Lets be honesy here regardless of wether you liked seasons 5 & 6 there still extremely compulsive viewing. I wait all year for the dvd's and try and avoid the tv spoilers as i love cabining myself up watching it over 2-3 days. I love films but would for go ever watching a film again if it meant 24 would go on for ever this well written. Bad 24 episodes or seasons(i dont there has been any) still trounce the very best of the rest. Lets face Celebrity strictly ice jungle brother or 24 not a contest GODBLESS JACK i say. Cant wait for Nov 1st 2010 when i expect the dvd release of season 8 |

I hope in this season the writers don't go ahead and blow there wad by episode 12. In too many seasons; the real action, suspense, big bangs and story arc are done by hour 12. After that it seems they grab onto some small piece of shrapnel to latch onto for the next six hours, and it repeats at hour 18 again and by hour 24 we are going after one bomb, assassin, WMD instead of the apocalypse we were expecting half way through. I know that fox viewers are a fickle crowd but jon cassar, howard gordon and joel surnow must have some faith in the rest of us transatlantic and true fans. That we are aware that 24 must have a steady flow of guns, blood and terror but it would be nice to have a season where all episodes flow into a grande finale. SPOILER i.e Season 1, jack kills all to get kim back (missing since episode 1), finds out that nina is evil. It shouldn't mean that the intervening 22 episodes are less exciting. It would be this viewers opinion that the first 8 episodes of season 1 are some of the best viewing (big or small screen) of the the previous decade and those episodes were only gathering pace for the rest of the season. So as always i am hopeful that there will be no cougar attacks, no long lost brother/father or supposedly dead allies but definitely more Morris O'Brian and another hectic day |

Jack's Back! Damn I love that phrase, because I know it means top TV, and in an age when most TV stations pump out nothing but celebrity reality shows featuring Z list losers with no talent, style or brains - we have a show which makes its own rules! Its always a thrill ride, edge of the seat adventure, not just another carbon copy of CSI and the like, with stylish people who swan in and out of crime scenes and bad situations in designer gear to cool electro pop music, with big views of the city they are in every 5 minsutes - just in case we've forgotten that say CSI Miami is set in erm...Miami (awful program, terrible acting). No 24 is just EXCELLENT! It's 100% original and never fails to impress, excite and surprise! A fan since season 2, I've loved them all (esp 5 - Logan was so so good, even the dodgy 6, the weakest in my opinion) and season 7 I think was a return to form, where they thankfully they didnt kill every good character off - except for poor ol Bill, and that brought back Tony (will he be in no. 8? - maybe best if he sits this one out and comes back in 9) and gave us a new setup making it feel new and fresh. Its strange because a lot of shows like this run out of steam by this point (say like the X-Files, which in its day was amazing but sadly ran a bit too long) but 24 keeps surprising people, its quality is always very high and if the trailer for no 8 is anything to go by, this season will be awesome! Its about time Jack got to NY, but 2015? Intersting setting it that far in the future. Like others though I will be waiting for this one on DVD, I couldnt stand watching it on sky, waiting a week for another episode - and all those bloody adverts every 10 mins! No has to be watched on boxset, over a few days!! I'm not sure how much life 24 or Jack (although I dont think 24 will be 24 without him - dont do 24: The Next Generation), but I'm going to be a fan and enjoy it until it ends and Jack hits the big screen! |

I think that even the most ardent 24 fan (i.e. me) would have to admit that the first two were quite poor. Slow pacing. Boring new characters. Replica plot. Dull.
