What's The Greatest Ever Movie Title?

Posted on Tuesday February 3, 2009, 15:04 by Ian Freer in Empire States
What's The Greatest Ever Movie Title?

Coming in to Empire towers this morning, I saw an advert for Hotel For Dogs on the side of a bus. If you don’t know, Hotel For Dogs stars Julia Roberts' Niece in a movie where she sets up 5-star accommodation for the neighbourhood waifs and strays. Whatever you think of the premise of the movie, it just stuck me that Hotel For Dogs as a title is a genius piece of marketing: cute, intriguing and straightforward. If you’re an eight year old girl, Hotel For Dogs (bet the rotweiller nicks the hand towels) sounds like the best film ever made. You immediately know everything you need to know about that movie from those three little words.

So this got me thinking about the greatest movie titles of all time. Some great movies have awkward titles — in 1977, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind must have been a right mouthful , the quality of the movie legitmising it as a phrase. Similarly, great titles have adorned terrible movies: Dude Where’s My Car or Snakes On A Plane are just catchy irresistible titles that mask a whiff of crapness. To me the acid test of any great title is how does it play if you imagine walking up to the box office and confidently asking for a ticket. “One for Slumdog Millionaire, please.” — simple.. “One for Syne…Synechdoak….the new Charlie Kaufman please” — not so good.

While it is easy to love the exploitation titles of the ‘50s (I Was A Teenage Werewolf!, My Mother Is A Repressed Librarian, that sort of thing), it seems to me that the best titles should be memorable without resorting to such shock tactics. So, with apologies to American Grafitti (it could have been called Rock Around The Block), Build My Gallows High, Annie Hall (how confident is it to call your film after a character no-one has ever heard of?), Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Some Like It Hot and Apocalypse Now, I’m going to plump for Reservoir Dogs as the greatest movie title ever concocted. I haven’t got a clue what a Reservoir Dog is — QT used to tell execs it was a famous term from ‘50s French film noir to calm their nerves — but it is atmospeheric, poetic memorable and the only way to describe Black, Blonde, Pink et al.

So what is the movie title that rocks your world? Have you got a jones for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind? Does the simple phrase Carry On Up The Khyber make your mouth water? Does The Seventh Seal just make you wish you’d seen the previous Six Seals?

It’s over to you…

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes- I rest my case. But seriously i think a great title doesn't need to be much more than what the film is - The Matrix is a great title. I love Dead Man's Shoes, Full Metal Jacket is another, and also I love the titles of the bonds- From Russia With Love would be my top Bond title

The best movie title still hasn't been made. Some years ago now, didn't Mike Myers suggest Austin Powers 4 would be "For Your Thighs Only"?

I don't know about the best, but the least imaginative must have been The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford because it's more of a synopsis, and gives away the ending! ;) Worst I think would be Snow Falling on Cedars. It's a great film, but that title put me off it for years.

I suppose Once Upon a Time in the West is my favourite title. Evokes a great deal of what the film is; epic story telling, almost operatic. Just brilliant.

Night of the Day of the Dawn of the Son of the Bride of the Return of the Revenge of the Terror of the Attack of the Evil, Mutant, Alien, Flesh Eating, Hellbound, Zombified Living Dead Part 2: In Shocking 2-D

Just because it's ridiculously long.

Bladerunner- until you watch the film you have no idea what it is- but is sounds cool as anything else ever uttered

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favourite film titles. Only two words, each repeated once, but it sums up the film perfectly - ridiculous, hilarious, bit of romance, bit of violence, THE END... other contenders: Stranger Than Fiction, Road To Perdition, The Big Lebowski (the Coens' titles are all good, but that has to be the best) and Vertigo

Revenge of the Sith,

Just because of the whole Revenge of the Jedi thing. and because I had guessed it was going to be called that before Clones came out. Rise of the Empire, bah, who ever believed Lucas would come up with any title so boring, he saves the boring bits for the films

Oh and also because it contains a word that was invented for the films!

I went to see The Foot Fist Way way back when (Alright, September, but it feels like a long time ago) Whilst I'm not the best at speaking in public, or anywhere, I said it loud enough, and the clerk still didn't know what I was saying, had to point it out on the showtime leaflet thingy.

Synecdoche, New York is a breeze to say anyway.

Great movie titles:

Die Hard
There Will Be Blood
North by Northwest

But my favourite would have to be Goodfella's.... just about perfect.

Shark in Venice. Thats from the 'Ronseal' school of film making. It is also an astonishingly bad film; witness the scene where Stevie Baldwin's leg floats, still kicking, to the sea bed a la bloke in boat in Jaws, only for the scene to cut to him running out of his hospital bed, ne'er a reference to the miraculous recovery explained.
Rambo First Blood: Part Two amuses me too.
Oh, and as a small child I always used to laugh at a video in the store that we were never allowed to rent. The reason? The title; 'One Tough Bastard'.
I've still never seen it, but I've sat through Shark In Venice so have no excuse.

Oh, good shout with Die Hard.

I'm biased, sure, but what about "Commando"? No mucking about, the movie pretty much delivers what you'd expect from a movie called "Commando".

And what about "Aliens"? It's the sequel to "Alien", but with more aliens! Simple but effective.

My vote goes on "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly". To me, that perfectly sums up the Wild West.

Oh, and Moosedog? The rogue apostrophe you put in "Goodfellas" must surely remove it from contention...

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Fight Club, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, The Silence of the Lambs, The Big Lebowski, Aliens, Apocalypse Now, Oldboy and Deconstructing Harry are all great titles, but the best title in history must be The Last Picture Show.

I quite enjoy the confusion (if not the movies) when talking about either '50 First Dates' or (the) '51st State'. Did they do that on purpose?

For my money, you can't knock 'Superbad'. Sounds like something from the blaxploitation genre, tells you nothing about plot or character but yet somehow intruiging...

is the best film title simpley because you know after hearing that its gonna be a comedy and you know exactly what films will be sent up in it.

Alien. It's a noun, it's an adjective. It's simple. It summarises the film perfectly. How many movies can be summarised in one word in that way. It's also amazing that it hadn't been used until that point.

And, as someone pointed out above, it leads to the second best title ever; the sequeltastic Aliens. As mentioned, it works in every way the first one does, and even builds on it. It also encapsulates the prime difference between the two.

Never mind the fact that both films are works of genius too, just for good measure.

No Contest in this one and I know someone mentioned it already.

" One Tough Bastard " is the greatest movie title of all time.
I would also recomend it as I have seen it on numerous occasions and it only gets better with each post pub viewing.

The scene where 'The Boz' (Brian Bosworth) asks 5 Thugs for info being a standout example of 90's action movies that most will view as bad but are really good

Give Brian Bosworth another shot at fame like Rourke and you won't regret it(This is all a little off topic really)

Slumdog Millionaire has to be up there, as does Goodfellas.
The Shawshank Redemption is brilliant because its such an obscure title, yet it's now probably one of the most famous films of all time and most adults and teenagers will have heard of it.
Fight Club because of its simplicity, Se7en for being original. The Departed is a fantastic movie title because it can confuse one when read at first.
Raging Bull is awesome as well, just such a cool title. How about Donnie Darko? Strange but brilliant. Blood Diamond? Sin City? Great.
Die Hard 2: Die Harder is such an overwhelmingly cool title too...

First Blood...........Awesome Movie...........Perfect Title

The Dark Knight.......a Batman Film without Batman in the title almost makes it even cooler (if possible)..........

and how's about Star Wars.......this is a film that was almost never made but is now without doubt the most ridiculously popular franchises in the world.....would anyone have gone to see it if it was called "Luke Skywalker versus the dark side of the force" before anyone knew what any of that meant?

Great Movie Titles:

'Saturday Night and Sunday Morning'
'Man Bites Dog'
'Dead Man Walking'
'Requiem for a Dream'
'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels'
'Dial M For Murder'
'The Nightmare Before Christmas'

Terrible Movie Titles:

'The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain'
'The Hottie and the Nottie'
'Hercules In New York'
'Eight Legged Freaks!'
'Octopussy'
'Sky Captain and the World of Tommorow'

Die Hard is probably my favourite but some of the sci-fi stuff like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and, obviously, Star Wars are great.

Dr Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, Predator, Gladiator, Serenity (it has a lovely, ominous sound to it), War of the Worlds, Mission: Impossible, The Man with the Golden Gun. I don't even like some of these films put they all capture the imagination in some way.

This was fun; they should do the worst titles next:

Adventures of Pluto Nash, Shortbus, Big Momma's House, etc... suggestions anyone

Movie Titles that tell you what you need to know:
School of Rock
Back to the Future
Kill Bill
I always liked the simplicity of The Terminator (because, woah, people wouldn't have used the word teminator with a capital T before that!)
And ofcourse, Sister Act.

I agree about Reservoir Dogs, that would have to be my favourite title (I still believe in the urban legend that Tarantino named it because 1. it sounded cool and 2. it's a portmanteau of Au revoir les Enfants and Straw Dogs).
My Film teacher thinks Kiss the Blood off my Hands is the best movie title ever.
Other interesting titles:
- Morvern Callar
- Brick
- The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (and all the rest of the Wes Anderson movies)
- Lost in Translation
- The Science of Sleep
- Sex lives of the Potato Men

My favourate:
"Back To the Future". A title that instantly conjures images of time travel and a journey home - the entire premis of the the film. Plus it's awsome.

A lot of people have mentioned Alien and Aliens and rightfully so, but I think "Alien Vs Predator" desrves a mention. Yes saying it was a pile of rancid shit is an insult to the pile of rancid shit community. But it says it all. There's an Alien and a Predator.... and they fight - that was it.

Good old Pixar:
"Toy Story" - A story about toys, job done.
"Cars" - A story about cars, I can't believe they got away with twice but job done.

"Ghostbusters" - Ghost's exist and this is a story about people who try and catch them, genius.

And finally the classic, punchy and to the point....
"Debbie Does Dallas" - There's a girl called Debbie and she's going to "do" everyone she can... in Dallas. Plus I'm sucker for the alliteration.

"There Will Be Blood" is my favourite title and I'd be hard pressed to find any other that tops it. The title just drags you in. Furthermore, it's a good metaphor for oil, for there is little blood--until the end.

Someone juggested it should've been "There Will Be Bowling." That'd been better.

Other faves:

(Poetic)
Kiss the Blood Off My Hands
To Live And Die And LA
Anything done by the great Arturo Ripstein ("Deep Crimson", "The Colonel Has No One To Write Him", "The Castle of Purity", "The Perdition of Men", "The Place Without Limits", "Time to Die"--and they are better in the original Spanish)
No Country For Old Men
Throne of Blood
The End of Violence
Once Upon A Time...movies
This Gun For Hire
They Saved Hitler's Brain

(To the Point)
They Saved Hitler's Brain
The Wild Bunch (and how!)
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The call and response of the first two "Dollars" movie
The Empire Strikes Back
Kill Bill
The 40 Year Old Virgin
School of Rock
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Annie Hall
Duck You Sucker!
The Assassination of Jesse James...
Borat...
Snakes On A Plane

(Silly)
They Saved Hitler's Brain
The Incredible Strange Creatures, etc.
Reefer Madness (Tell Your Children!)
Cocaine Fiends
Surf Nazis Must Die!
Plan 9 From Outer Space
They Call Him Sasquatch
Murder By Death
One Tough Bastard
I Spit In Your Grave, I Piss on Your Corpse

OK, I must admit: They Saved Hitler's Brain is one of the greatest titles ever. You don't need to know more.

I also support:

The Empire Strikes Back (think about seeing that poster in 1980 after the first film melted your face-Perfection)

The Dark Knight - couldn't possibly be called anything else and have the gravitas

The 40 Year Old Virgin/Knocked Up -Apatow knows how to get it across in a title

Some suggested ones that I have to agree with,

Back to the Future,
Sin City,
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,

to name a few.

Personally I think Babel is a great name for a film, one word, some interesting associations and the promise of a multi-strand film makes you think Oscar. Unfortunately, watching it quickly shatters those illusions. Gomorrah is another great one. Cloverfield just for its mystery. And Pulp Fiction. Oh, and Good Will Hunting!

The list goes on...

Yeah, I forgot "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" and "The Meaning of Life" (though I disagree that the film strays from the subject--it actually nailed the subject). "Goodfellas" is a great title too.

And I agree with Juno14's assesment of "Babel"

I do love Nick Hornby's 'High Fidelity', just sounds fun to say, plus it's a cracking film. Papillon is also a great film title, and Zulu! Zulu is almost exploitive in it's title, it sounds like it really ought to have an exclamation mark after it and maybe a sub-heading (Zulu! The Glory of the Empire) but that's just my opinion. And finallym, on of my absolute favorite movie titles is 'The Man who would be King' i just love the images and ideas it conjures.

To mention a few that haven't been mentioned before

Face/Off - about a faceoff between two guys with their faces off, good use og the forward slash there!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - mixing up the whodunit with the cartoon as perfectly as the film itself

Speed - sort of in the vain on Alien, Jaws etc.

Con Air - because it's awesome and tells you exactly what to expect

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life - I'm totally kidding about that!

The Truman Show

Ghostbusters. Before you know anything about the film (you would probably have to go back to 1983 to find many people who don't though) the title tells you all you need to know; Ghosts... being being busted, the busting of ghosts.

I like a bit of mystery in a title as well.

I was watching vanilla sky last night (been a couple of years since i first saw it) and thats a great title.

Another fav is

the happiness of the katakuri

a film that is a japenese comedy zombie musical, . Genius!

Mmm... lets throw a few I didn't see here yet:

Flesh + Blood
Rosemary's Baby
The Thing
Assault on Precint 13
Match Point
Little Children
There Was a Crooked Man...
Rushmore
Man on Fire
The Innocents
The Long Kiss Goodnight

And the worst: pretentious ones (Babel or Atonement), silly ones (The Phantom Menace / The Attack of the Clowns), disturbing ones (Bride Wars, The Sweetest Thing), or cheap ones (Hard to Kill, Cyborg)...

I know it was a book first, but I really like The Silence of the Lambs. I like those titles that pertain to a detail in the narrative, that only become clear once you've seen it (and refer to a broader theme of the piece). I like Saving Private Ryan, and Last of the Mohicans too for the same reasons (though obviously LOTM as a novel seriously precedes the film!)

This is simple, no?

Die Hard.

Two words, telling you literally everything you need to know about the film. That it involves death, but not of the softcore nature.

As for shit titles: Gomorrah made me feel like I was buying a ticket for an STI, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars suffered because in a five word title, two words are the same, and three rhyme clunkily. And worst of all, when put in the logo seen on posters and TV spots, it read Star The Clone Wars Wars. Not good.

Agree with most of the above, especially Die Hard and Alien/Aliens.
A new one that i think hasn't been mentioned is Bad Boys - Does what is says on the tin, and also a known TV cops theme tune. Brilliant!

Others that do what they say on the tin: Jurassic Park, The Hunt for Red October, The Rock, When Harry met Sally, Apollo 13.

How has no one mentioned JCVD yet?

And before you ask me why this is a great title when it's just a set of initials I will put it to you as this, that film title that purely speaks to the people who will be interested in seeing it and them alone.

It's purely brilliant marketing, imagine being in conversation with someone. "What you doing this weekend?" to which the reply of "Seeing JCVD" would either be greeted with "You What" or "Cool, you seeing a film on Jean Claude Van Damme, sounds awesome".

If you ask me that's the job done just by a title.

(Please take with a pinch of salt, I was just surprised it hadn't been mentioned either as a good or bad entry)

Amadeus - In one word it captures the subject and the theme of this film. We instantly know it's about Mozart, but it also focuses the mind on the meaning of his middle name - 'beloved of god' - which is ultimately what the story is about - the frustration of mediocrity when faced with 'god-given' genious.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Great title. I though the Forbidden Kingdom was a completely inappropriate title for the film because it wasn't really forbidden was it because people were roaming where they pleased, but that was a good title that made me think ..ooohhhhh! Sounds naughty. But yeah, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

I consider "Annie Hall" a great title because it could've been called anything else from the original "Anehedonia" or something more rom-com traditional like "Alvy and Annie." Naming the film after the lead female character, does a good job of pointing out the center and heart of the film. This is all my humble opinion, of course.

That being said, "It Had To Be Jew" would've been fantastic. I might steal it someday.

I agree with some of the recently named titles: "The Dark Knight", "Pulp Fiction", "Amadeus", "Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Sex..." and the Bond titles ("From Russia With Love".) Books truly have the best titles.

i can dig that re: 'annie hall', i think it's a decent title when also taking the film into consideration, but as a great film title on its own merits it's a bit bland, imho, no offence intended. i love annie, one of the few (if not the only?) female potheads in classic cinema history.

it's amazing how effective/descriptive one-word titles can be: platoon, twister, psycho, cabaret, grease, scream, vertigo, casino, deliverance, castaway, irreversible...and many more yet to get a mention

I may have missed it in my brief perusal, but can we really live in a world where people don't instantly think of Robocop as the greatest film title ever? Having cause to think of that title just makes my day so much sunnier.

Speaking of Robocop, try singing this over the Robocop theme tune:

I am a Robocop,
A Robocop,
I'm a robotic cop!
I am a policeman, made of metal,
I'm a Robocop!!!

Lame, I know, but somehow hilarious all the same. I'd like to say I came up with these inept lyrics as a child, but no, they are the product of a 24 year old man's educated imagination.

Also, it may be a videogame, but Robocop vs Terminator is a stonking title, and when it was released 'Vs' titles hadn't been overused (now I almost regard them as a form of imaginative bankrupty) and the concept of two iconic SF/horror characters waging war on one another hadn't been soiled by other unnameable franchise killers. An absolutely classic game, though, I'd recommend getting an emulation of it online because it rocks hard.

I always like the titles where the film does what it says on the label. Examples; Nightmare in a Damaged Brain is a good one, The Incredible Melting Man, The Evil Dead, My Bloody Valentine. Basically 99% of all horror movies! At least you've got a reasonably sure bet of what you're going to get for your money.

A Nymphoid Barbarian In Dinosaur Hell - hands down the most awesome exploitation style title ever. All that's missing is an exclamation point at the end. In fact, why not two (A Nymphoid Barbarian! In Dinosaur Hell!)? Oh yeah, more than enough reason to get this remade rather than pillaging classics.
Gotta agree with anyone who says The Dark Knight just for the decision to make a movie about Batman and not put it right there in the title. The knucklef***ers who changed Smallville to Smallville:Superman the Early Years and Batman Beyond to Batman Of The Future should take note. And early retirement.
Also love The Constant Gardener - by starting enigmatic it sets the tone right off the bat, Meet The Feebles, Back To The Future, The Goonies, Brick and Bubba Ho-Tep.
But lets be honest there probably never will be a title for anything as "I'm There Already" as Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.

Bad titles? Well Quantum Of Such Arse just screams "I'm a cleverer-than-thou literary type, please ask me what this means." Trust me, we can smell our own.
Similar degrees of authorial headupmanship beset the spelling of Inglourious Basterds. Please let this be a case of bad title masking great film.
Unlike Elizabethtown, a title thoroughly deserving of the film that follows it.

And finally a moment for title changes. Cause The Rundown is a great title, and Welcome To The Jungle isn't. More understandable is Harold and Kumar getting the munchies rather than going to White Castle. a) we don't have White Castle and b) surely no-one's ever been stoned enough to want it.

Face/Off because I love the power switch formatting.
Heat - cold, ruthless efficiency that sums up that criminal professionalism that Michael Mann is so fascinated with.
The Dark Knight is a bit of a cracker, because anyone who's seen the film will notice just how bleak both the era and the protagonist actually become, plus bonus points for having the guts not to tack on another meaningless word to 'Batman'.
The Terminator - badass or what?!
12 Angry Men - evokes the volatility and claustrophobia of the situation perfectly.
Oh and regardless of what you think of the film and the Bond, I always loved the sound of The Living Daylights - it sounds like an implication of horror and violence without actually being explicit (you'd have to wait for the more on-the-nose Licence to Kill for the head exploding though).

Lambastico- Your Robocop lyrics really do fit in with the theme song! They are stuck on my head now. Thanks a lot!

I must confess that "Quantum of Solace" never bothered me. They wanted a Fleming title, and they stuck with this one (which is linked to the evil organization of the movie as well) That said, I think "Risico" (another Fleming title) would be terrific...maybe if they get Pacino (as it was rumored), perhaps playing a Goldfinger-like character...Risico!

Easy! - Back To The Future. Just for the fact, that if you think about it from McFly's point of view he comes from the present & not the future, so he wants to go back to the present - so the title is from the point of view of the Doc and not the main character. Plus, when the Doc actually says it, it's freakin' awesome - & when he says it again at the end of the movie!

Worst fim title: Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind -- title says nothing, and can anyone remember it?

Film title I'd most like to see: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch -- I hope Simon Pegg is reading this blog

E.T. is a good un. King Kong too, and Pirates of The Caribbean.

Kill Bill I think has to be the worst film title. I mean who is this Bill they speak of, and why must he be killed? However Tarantino does have many other great flick names - the aforementioned Reservoir Dogs for one. Pulp Fiction, Death Proof....

Steel Magnolias - no clue what it really refers to, but I kind of like it anyway. Beetlejuice - although I never understand why it's spelled differently in the title and in the movie (Betelgeuse? How would you know it was pronounced 'Beetlejuice'?)
Dances With Wolves. It's poetic and a better way of saying this movie is about a bloke called John Dunbar.

I agree with Reservior Dog. In fact, I'm fond to all of Tarantino's titles. He seems to have a habit of naming his films with great mystery, i.e. Reservior Dog, Pulp Fiction, the up in coming, Inglourious Basterds, or titling them as a dead plot give away- Kill Bill and Death Proof.

However, I would have to cast my vote for Pulp Fiction, simply because I love that term already: old noir stories written on cheap paper. That fact that they even have a term for that says something.

Good Will Hunting, so many possible meanings...
But never mind original titles let's talk about the titles created for movies in Brazil, my home country for apparent no reason such as a intranslatable word for example, they simply change them and they are horrendous, what do you think of the title for Parenthood "The shot that came out the wrong way" or "Sound of music" being "The Rebel Nun" or even worse in Portugal "Psycho" was launched as "The son that killed his Mother" say no more.

other choices...
goodfellas because it is the name of a pizza

the dark knight which kinda brakes the rules because no superhero film has a name which you will be proud to say youve seen ( spider- man? iron man? THE INCREDIBLE HULK?)

scary movie it does get straight to the piont, even if the point is shit

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle - gives me the creeps just thinking about it. Jurassic Park - it's a park... with dinosaurs. Jaws - nuff said. The Terminator. Back To The Future - makes no sense until you see the film and then you realise it's basically the major plotline. About a Boy - yes it was the book title first but still good - is it the kid or the adult who the title talks about? We just don't rightly know.

Maybe it's just me but I really struggle to say The Descent without sounding like I'm drunk. So that makes it a bad title, good film though.
A good title makes you wanna see a movie no matter what so my stand out title has gots to be Cannibal Women In The Avocado Jungle Of Death.
Kinda love Jaws as well (especially as the French title is Les Dents De La Mer, hey you do the translation!)

So many to choose from. Of note are:
The Silence Of The Lambs (what's this? A sweeping romantic epic, possibly starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford or a genius serial killer film which Hitchcock would've approved of)
White Heat (a film that promises ridiculous levels of brutality and coolness and delivers on both counts)
Die Hard (a title only possibly bettered by Die Hard With A Vengeance, but definitely not Live Free Or Die Hard)
Halloween (it works)
Event Horizon (sounds like it should be a seriously awesome sci-fi mind-bender. Nevermind)
Goldeneye (What a Bond film should be called. Quantum Of Solace is what a Bond film should never be called)
The Departed (even though it sounds like a horror film, it strangely fits this cop thriller)
The Sum Of All Fears (nicely sets the tone for the panic to come)
The Last Seduction (sold!)

Die you Zombie Bastards!!! (There are zombies, they must die)
Tokyo Gore Police (Set in Tokyo, very gory and there are police)
Monsterhouse (Its a house...thats a monster)
Death Race 2000 (Better than the remake because it is set in the "future" which is instantly cooler)

And of course the greatest title ever, along with the greatest movie ever... JAWS. Simple, to the point and with big freakin teeth

I like the reference to Heat. Reminds me of how The Wire uses a quote from each episode as it's title. Heat did that brilliantly.

Superman is to the point and Superman Returns is unnecessary. 'nuff said on that one.

I like The Unforgiven though... actually, it's the point of 'Clint Eastwood...The Unforgiven' that nails it. You know what kind of ride you're going on. However, what about the original titles ie what could have been? Did an IMBD search and found out The Unforgiven's original script title was The Cut Whore Killings. But perhaps that's for another blog (unless it's been done before.
