Name Your Favourite Superhero Game

Name Your Favourite Superhero Game

You may have forgotten (and, in the majority of cases, who could blame you?) but comic books have offered fairly frequent material for video games over the years. Superman, Spider-Man, Batman and even blooming Aquaman have been replicated in various amounts of pixels since the late ‘70s.

Something recently occurred to me during my second playthrough of the sublime Batman: Arkham Asylum – a game that allows my penchant for detective work, gadgetry and martial arts to thrive within the haunted corridors of fiction’s most infamous madhouse*. This could be the truest video game adaptation of a comic book ever. It’s certainly the Dark Knight’s most accurate representation to date. It’s an exemplary title among the hefty pile of dreary efforts that plagued bygone consoles for years (yes, I’m looking at you Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu and Batman: Dark Tomorrow) that have left the Caped Crusader’s reputation as tattered as half of Two-Face’s jacket. The bad half.

But amongst the long, long list of stinkers, titles like Arkham Asylum have broken through the genre confines to become truly classic games. So it begs the question: what is the best superhero game of all time?

First taking flight on the Atari 2600 in 1978, Superman was (of course) quickest off the mark in bringing some of the world’s most beloved costumed vigilantes to the furious fingers of fans. While that archaic-looking interpretation of the Man of Steel may as well date from a century ago, the idea of hopping into a phone booth and flying off to thwart another dastardly scheme by Lex Luthor remains an irresistible prospect and a distinct thrill so perfectly encapsulated over thirty years ago.

It’s a feeling that Batman has had more luck emulating, as the pointy-eared night rat mastered the art of the movie tie-in early on with Burton’s gothic caper Batman getting a NES makeover in 1989. While the use of batarang, batdisc and grappling hook may seem basic, they were all welcome additions that elevated this above just a routine brawler. Subsequent games based on the Caped Crusader have also proved promising, with the Mortal Kombat inspired Batman Forever and the block-buster Lego Batman giving a taste of the years’ varying bat droppings. Gotham’s infamous vigilante has always held something to offer different demographics.

However, it’s Spider-Man who has been crowned supreme for many years, with the one of the defining gaming experiences of the last generation Spider-Man 2. Developed by Treyarch (Call of Duty: Black Ops developer; unfairly branded as Infinity Ward’s ugly sister), Spider-Man 2 took Spidey into an open-world New York, allowing players to swing around the city with unparalleled freedom. Treyarch also developed the criminally underrated Ultimate Spider-Man game, a canonical tale straight from the comics, retaining the signature art style of the series. However, some (by which I begrudgingly mean older) gamers may be more inclined towards the Playstation/Dreamcast original Spider-Man offerings that, while restrictive, certainly nailed the tone of the animated series.

But what is it that makes a superhero video game perfect? Is it the environment which they inhabit? New York City fuelled exploration in Spider-Man 2, while the gameplay-stunting Metropolis was Superman 64’s Kryptonite. Other titles have triumphed and failed based on the inability to grasp what makes their heroes so, well, super. On a basic gameplay level, the recent Iron Man titles never took flight, whereas Hulk: Ultimate Destruction provided enough puny human pummelling to satisfy a (console) generation of pent-up players.

I’ll always return (perhaps with an over-indulgence of rose-tinted nostalgia) to Blizzard’s The Death and Return of Superman. Few titles have managed to encompass such an innovative angle on an iconic character, adapting one of the most beloved of Superman’s adventures while making the side-scrolling beat-‘em-up instantly endearing with its faithfully moody visuals and polished gameplay. If any superhero game deserves a next-gen upgrade, then I can’t think of one better suited.

So what’s your favourite video game based on an iconic superhero? Arkham Asylum? Spider-Man 2? Maybe you can’t resist kicking the adamantium out of each other, courtesy of X-Men: Mutant Academy or Marvel vs. Capcom. Heck, maybe you even braved the creaking monstrosities that were the two recent Iron Man games. Whatever your excuse for getting into your virtual underwear-over-tights combo, let us know below.

*I’m prepared to be corrected on that one...

Arkham Asylum cannot be beat

ARKHAM ASYLUM was FLAVA! However, Snake-Eyes has a particular soft-spot for the bone-crunching goodness of MORTAL KOMBAT vs DC UNIVERSE.

Remember the SPIDER-MAN game for Playstation One...? COOL!

Arkham Asylum set the standard pretty damn high. The Spider-man 2 game was rather good as well though.

The death and Return of Superman game (at least on the SNES), was the exact same engine as Batman Returns.

Arkham Asylum will not be beat, well at least until Arkham city is released next autumn. I hope...

Agreed on the rest so far. Arkham Asylum. that I've played, the only decent superhero game. Though I did read good things about the Spiderman game (and very mixed reviews regarding DC Vs MK).

that said, i am looking forward to (if i can get a PS3) DC Universe Online which looks like it should be very good.

Arkham Asylum is easily without a doubt the best superhero game ever realeased! No competition. Bring on Arkham city

Well the Iron Man games were all but unplayable, the Fantastic Four ROTSS was just dull and repetetive and Marvel Ultimate Alliance(s) were also pretty uninspiring, so I have to agree that Batman: Arkham Asylum is without a doubt the best, most immersive and enjoyable super-hero video game to date.
Which also means that this time next year, Batman: Arkham City will be the number 1 selling game in the run-up to Christmas.

My two favorite Super Hero games had the same protagonist: Batman. Batman Returns for the SNES and - Of course - Arkham Asylum.

Arkham Asylum was awesome, although too short, really looking forward to the sequel. The ps1 spiderman games were great fun and i really enjoyed
Possibly my all time favorite however was X2: Wolverines Revenge. They added X2 to the tittle and plastered hugh jackmans face on the box to tie it into the movie (which almost made me dismiss it as another crappy movie tie-in game) but its actually nothing to do with the film and is completly awesome. Plus for a bonus Mark Hammil voices Wolvie

I am way behind the times but I love playing and replaying X Men 2 the Clone Wars for Sega Genesis. Also Marvel War of the Gems for SNES and its cousin Marvel Super Heroes (arcade console, Playstation) are good fun too. As well as having good game play these score major points for being true to the comics.

Again Arkham Asylum is by far the best ever, but i have fond memories of a game on the PS1 i think, which was an Avengers game and you could pick which Avenger you wanted to be, just cant remember the name of it :(

I think up until Batman Arkham Spider-Man was reigning supreme in the comic book game department i mean he even had an actually good movie tie in game which hardly ever happens in the gaming world, but tbh i think Arkham City is going to keep the crown firmly on Batmans head not to mention DC Online ...lol seems DC is going to be leading it for a while..

Everyone is saying Arkham Asylum so who am I to disagree? And why not, it is an awesome game. But Spider-Man 2 comes close to the top- a brilliant hero gets a brilliant game. Spider-Man 3 lost its way, and for me was quite dissapointing, but Web of Shadows really is underrated- the swinging is immense, but they still havent made the perfect Spidey game even though '2' comes close :-( hopefully they will do soon...

I'm going to cheat. He might not be a "superhero" as such but he's a superspy, and as a result a hero. Mix the two together: superhero.

GoldenEye on the N64. Nuff said. If it's strictly comic books then Arkham Asylum wins by a country mile. It's spectacular.

The Spider-man games were fun for web-slinging alone (I mean what other game has web-slinging?), but Arkham Asylum is in a league of it's own. Rather than being a decent comic book/movie adaption based on a GTA type format, Arkham is an incredible game in it's own right (Batman or no Batman) with loads of fresh ideas. Everything was amazing. The gadgets, the hand-to-hand combat, the graphics, the environments, the villians, the voice work. The production values and overall polish are up there with the MGS4 and Uncharted 2. A real triple A title and one of the best games of the last few years.
So bad is the superhero game genre, that I almost passed Arkham off as another cheap cash-in made to coincide with the success of The Dark Knight. I was happy to be proven wrong.

Spiderman on the Sega Megadrive was solid....and there was a decent version of Batman on the original NES, but Arkham Asylum was awesome. You WERE Batman!!!! Definitely my ultimate "superhero" game!

Other notables - the X-Men titles on PS2 were well worth playing. For multiplayer, the arcade version of TMHT was lots of fun. While in terms of fighting games, X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes were great, while Marvel vs Capcom 2 is the ultimate!!

Arkham Asylum by far, it was the perfect comic video game but other standouts would be Spider-Man 1 & 2 on PS2, Ultimate Spider-Man and X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse.

I feel that Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions have been underrated as well.
I will always have a nostalgic fond spot for Spider-Man/X-Men: Arcade's Revenge as well as Captain America and the Avengers too.

there was a game in the mid 80s for the Commodore 64 called Doctor Dooms Revenge where you could play as Spider-man or Captain America. I was a beat em up along the format of Street Fighter. Came with a cool free comic book (which I still have) and I remember being blown away by it...

Whilst I know both Alien(s) and Predator were originally film titles, they first came together in comic book form as Aliens vs Predator and are yet to appear on film (all evidence to the contrary is just rumour and lies....).
Thus, based on a technicality, I am going to put forward the case for Aliens vs Predator 2. I know it came out 8-9 years ago, but the inter-connected nature of the story to all three elements to the game were great, especially with the backstory notes left around the levels.
The first marine level provided some great scares, despite nothing actually happening, and then a few levels in, when retreating from an Alien nest with swarms of the blighters coming after you was truely brown-trousers time.
If you coupled how differently the different classes played (alien, marine and predator) it all adds up to a fantastic game.

If they do Superman & Batman Vs Alien & Predator, then that would surely be a shoo-in for best comic book adaption ever....

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE is without a doubt with Arkham Asylum the best videogma based in superheroes ever made but if I have to choose I pick Wolverine because Batman is so repetitive at the end and the final enemey, a ridiculous joker is just to easy to beat and the improvings are almost nothing, just a desperate new gadgets to make the game large ignoring that when you finish it you have no intention to play it again.

In terms of superhero games, I couldn't get enough of inFamous. In terms of strictly comic-book based then I agree with the majority that it's got to be Batman: Arkham Asylum.

Something interesting to note is that your reviews of Spider-Man 2 and Batman: Arkham Asylum resulted in 4 stars, yet the words used above are 'classic' and 'sublime.' Are retrospective reviews in order?

Spiderman: Web of Shadows I thought was a much better web slinging experience and brought you closer to the real Spiderman experience than Spiderman 2. Really underrated (and shit pack art!)

My favourite superhero gaming experience has to be Spiderman: The Video Game which you could find in the arcades in 1991 from Sega. Simultaneous 4 player side scrolling beat em' up action a la Final Fight where you can choose from Spidey, Namor, Black Cat or Hawkeye. I remember that feeling of it being the absolute bollocks! Regardless of how a game stands up, I'll always measure games on the way they made me feel at the time, and in that respect Spiderman: The Video Game comes out top!

Well for me Spiderman and the X-men Arcades Revenge was somehow a gripping, mysterious and IMPOSSIBLE game to complete. Good fun choosing from cyclops, storm, gambit, logan and spiderman with great gameplay good graphics and character ability based sub games. Spiderman on the PS2 was amazing, first game to really put craft into superhero gaming but not just because I am a MASSIVE Bat-Addict but A.Asylum is hands down the best, im completed it 5 or 6 times and still love it, needs a batmobile level in the new one and a merged detective mode, cant stand running around in negative, but now I know all the riddlers bits off by heart (sad).

I'm a tad surprised nobody has mentioned Infamous, which was a superb game, with actual decisions and choices to make. The sequel is due to come out early next year and I think we'll be hearing a lot more about it in the coming months! But I think my out and out favourite has got to be Spider-man 3 on the PS2, just to climb to the top of the emipire state building before leaping off.....woooosh!

I was addicted to Spider-man 2 on the ps2, mainly because of the whole web-slinging and the free roam gameplay which i'm a big fan of. I played Iron Man, Superman Returns and Incredible Hulk which were all ok only gud things about the first two was that you could fly which was pretty damn cool for a while and the Hulk is free roam in New York aswell but was not as good as Spider-man 2 though it was quite fun. I only played the demo for Arkham Asylum which i thought was awesome but i must check the full game out as everyone seems to only be saying good things about it.

A small niggle about the otherwise excellent Arkham Asylum - they didn't need to make Harlequin so unbelievably buxom, in that typical teenage gamer fantasy way. It kind of spoils her impish, childlike quality. They can easily leave the voluptuousness to Poison Ivy, whose character is clearly *a woman* as opposed to a little girl.

must be the stars wars game on the nes which provided an extension to a new hope. allowing you to explore more of the dune sea. The game also gave the player more in terms of the genre defining lightsaber. One of the first games to introduce tactical game character and weapon changes if you in the mood for a clumsy and random blaster or were running low of health. The experience also extended to vehicles such as the landspeeder and legendary
millenium falcon negoiating the bombarding asteriods and survival depending on the number of shield generators collected previously. But the ultimate was the inspiring music when selecting Han Solo and imediately getting his theme music with that 1980's twang. CHECK IT OUT! You Tube star wars episode IV - NES game - soundtrack

I agree with Silent Bob Arkham was killer, but Spiderman 2 is the bomb. Being able to freefall from the empire state building with the wind whipping past you and shooting a web just in time to skim the ground and do a triple flip into the air and shooting out another web to breeze on through the manahttan skyline was just one of the coolest vg moments ever for me

Batman Arkham Asylum was freaking awsome i mean it had everything great graphics, brilliant storyline and of course Batman the ultimate superhero. It was also great having a whole new adventure for Batman to begin. Atlthough i've allways been a fan of the PlayStation 2 game 'The Incredibles' just a great game in genral. Again fantastic storyline and great fun to play and complete. Both games are terrific, i just cannot wait for 'Batman Arkham City'!.
