Great Film, Shame About The Poster
Posted on Wednesday February 10, 2010, 15:14 by Helen O'Hara in Empire States
I was lucky enough to see Drew Barrymore's directorial debut Whip It recently, and I'm telling you right now that it both rocks and rolls. Starring Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Juliette frickin' Lewis, Marcia Gay Harden and Barrymore herself, it's the story of a girl encouraged to be a beauty queen by her mother, who instead turns to the violent, slightly demented sport of roller derby. It is, in other words, a sports movie for girls, and while it pretty much hits all the beats of that genre, it does so in a really smart and funny way. My feisty, feminist, Doc-Martens-with-roses-on wearing flatmate and myself came out of the film literally bouncing and grinning and wondering why on Earth this didn't do better at the US box office*. But not to worry: the distributors here in the UK have decided to go a different route with the poster - and the result is this: That's a BIG contrast to the US poster. So we've gone from tough, sporty, something that looks like it could almost be from Rollerball (the original. Let us never speak of the remake) to an outtake from The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants**. This is a film that should be a cult hit for years to come, the film that every single cool girl in your school is going to watch (along with Heathers and maybe Empire Records) and it's been saddled with this pink monstrosity. And why pink? Does anyone in the film wear pink or indulge in pink at any point? No; this is simply code for "chick flick: check your brain at the door". I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the marketeers here: the film did underperform in the US and does have its work cut out for it, because we as an audience aren't exactly conditioned to expect smart, funny, subversive films that are about women or girls. But really! Pink? With that quirky font and not a rollerskate in sight? For shame! Ahem. So any other films that you felt were missold by their own posters? A Room for Romeo Brass springs to mind; what else sticks out for you? *Presumably, guys thought it was a chick flick and women thought it was, I dunno, a teen sex comedy domination thing? Who knows what these people think? ** Which is, actually, better than its title. A bit better, anyway.

The poster for the laws of attractions is one of the funiest movie poster I've ever seen...but the Us censored it... |

I'd disagree... To me it doesn't scream chick flick though it does firmly aim itself at a female audience. From my personal experience with roller derby in the UK it seems to be predominantly favoured by women with penchant for bettie page bangs and that 50's punk rock aesthetic and that subtely comes across on this poster. the pink it dirty but undoubtly pink. the framing of the photo's are uneven but sturdy, a technique utlised in kitch 50's homage's like Hairspray while the chosen font is grittier than what you'd expect for a chick flick. it's rough. like the girls in the film presumably. it's also a big fun poster while the US poster is bland and drab. i think you need to look past the pink. |

problem is that they are ignoring the roller derby aspect of the film, thinking a US sport movie will fail as others have at UK box office. |

Reign of Fire poster was brilliant, shame the scene it depicted never actually happened in the film. |

I know it's a shit film, but the poster for Bankok Dangerous is a masterpiece of photoshop abuse. Totally stupid and pointless.
Also totally agree with Judge on Reign of Fire. |

Synecdoche, New York. It's just a picture of Philip Seymour Hoffman with a tag saying "the smash hit comedy of the year". I couldn't think of anything further away from what it should be advertising - but then, it's not an easy movie to market. |

I agree with Dunkah, I don't see too much wrong with this. I mean what is Roller Derby anyway? Just because you like pink doesn't mean your IQ automatically drops 20 points. Plus now I know Allison Hannigan is in it, I'm sold! |

I've seen this film. The UK poster definitely suits it more. The US poster has it looking like some kind of hybrid of Rocky and 8 Mile blah blah Gritty down on their luck girl needs to drag herself out of the gutter to prove she's better than that etc etc.
Its not at all. Its a pretty light hearted film featuring a completely retarded sport and lashings of girl bonding with no major drama at all.
Oh and its not really very good. Meh to average would be how I describe it with emphasis on the Meh
Oh and its the poster for RULES of attraction which was the funny one. Laws of attraction is that shitty one where pierce brosnan and Julianne moore go to Ireland for approximately 10 minutes. |

To be fair, the US poster doesn't have any rollerskates in it either.
And it felt the need to say the title twice. |

Ugh! You're absolutely right, Helen. Whomever this UK graphic designer is, they deserve a good kick in the head. I wish they had kept the title of the book (Derby Girl). It's much more fitting... |

No, the UK poster is much better. To me it looks girly but fun, and the style of it gives it a slightly indie-ish edge. Despite the whoo-girl pictures that make up the title on the US poster, it still looks a serious, gritty sports film - like Million Dollar Baby, (hopefully with a different ending). Plenty of cool girls like pink, even if they do it semi-ironically. |

Helen, you are wrong.
Ellen Page looks like Marlon Brando in The Godfather in the American poster and it really says nothing about the film whatsoever. The British attempt is far more vibrant and 'attractive' (I use the word in a convivial sense), and it at least gives you a sense of the film's playfulness.
Who are you to be bemoaning the sexist connotations of the colour pink when you prescribe the movie only to the 'cool girls' in school..?

This might contradict my previous post slightly but my girlfriend agrees with you, Helen. She reckons it looks like Bring It On or something. In which case i reckon the problem isn't in the design itself but the selection of photo's used. Uninspired pictures of smiling girls (and moody ones) that say sod all about what happens in the flick. But it's still better than the Yank poster. |

I think the UK poster is better. It will appeal more to the female audience, it mentions on it that its a Cool, smart and sexy movie (OK, both quotes are from The Mirror but the Empire review is probably not done yet), and it looks like a Richard Curtis movie poster (More Love Actually than the Boat that Rocked) so people will find comfort in that I guess. As for the US one with the cheesy tag line, she looks like a jockey in it.... Based on the poster alone, I'd let the missus take me to the movie that has the UK poster..... Is that not Alyson Hannigan at 3 o'clock on the poster? |

What about the diabolical poster for "Serenity" that must have cost them a million cinema ticket sales. I'm a died in the wool fan of Firefly and it nearly put me off... |

What a terrible article. The writer has the audacity to criticise the clichéd film poster when her own article is full of clichés itself: 'My feisty, feminist, Doc-Martens-with-roses-on wearing flatmate' I bet the film characters all wear dungarees and flowery doc-martins too. She has managed to do more to put me off the film with this one review than both Ellen Page and the film poster ever could |

Neither poster appeals at all. What is this sport? Sorry to be ignorant but ever heard of it. Have there been other examples of major differences between US and UK posters? Agree that Rules of Attraction was one of the best ever. Why did the US censor it??!! |

The Boat That Rocked
Worst poster - I was completely turned off the movie by the poster. When I finally saw the movie I was really pleasantly surprised. Nothing what I expected from the poster! |

Google the poster for Ravenous. Fantastic off beat 'lil movie. Useless poster. It even says on wikipedia that some of the crew saw the poster before it was released and knew it would flop.
Also, when my mate was a kid he thought Star Trek: The Motion Picture featured an enemy called 'The Motion Picture' and he was all like. "Ooh, can't WAIT to see the Motion Picture attack the enterprise". Now THAT'S false advertising. |

I actually really like the American poster asthetically, but can see why it bombed in America, because as a selling tool it's useless. ... she could be a female Jockey for all I know... Is she? hmmm
They obvuously missed the target demographic and 'feminized' the UK poster. It is awful, but then if it gets bumbs on seats... |

In France, the movie was renamed "Bliss", to make the connection with "Juno" : two movies with Ellen Paige who has a funny name.
The poster didn't have pink, and I believe the movie didn't have that much success, although I agree that it's a pretty damn good movie.
Also, Alyson Hannigan is definitively not in it. But Juliette Lewis is, which is pretty awesome though. |

To be honest I think both posters kind of suck. The american poster makes it look like a million dollar baby wannabe and the tag line "be your own hero"? nausea inducing.
the british poster makes it look like your standard chick flick which to be honest i'd suspect it pretty much is. but then maybe im biased by my irrational dislike for ellen page, which stems from my completely rational hatred for juno. what was the fuss with that film? it tried so hard to be this intelligent quirky indie film when it quite clearly was not.
sorry. not really relevant to this blog. it just still annoys me. |
