My Favourite Christmas Movie: The Muppet Christmas Carol
Posted on Tuesday December 23, 2008, 14:35 by Emily Phillips in Empire States
Now, running after Brazil, Die Hard and Uncle Buck, touting of The Muppet Christmas Carol as my favourite festive movie just seems unimaginative. But I put this to you, that unlike all the others, this film leaves no one - not the poor, the old, the young, the cast-out - no one, still uttering ‘Bah Humbug’ by the time the credits roll. Having watched it twice already this festive season, I can fully vouch for the power of this all singing, all dancing, all encompassing tale of the misery-guts who finds Christmas. It has cheesy sing-along songs; pitch-perfect one-liners (“light the lamp, not the rat”); Beaker and Bunsen as the least offensive charity-muggers known to man; and Michael Caine hamming it up with a blob of mustard on top. What is not to love? Some may say there is even something phantasmically endearing about the fiendishly foetal Ghost of Christmas Past... Song-wise, The Muppet Christmas Carol outstrips every other original Christmas film score, and as much as Home Alone can roll out Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree to great effect - it can’t beat a number like One More Sleep ‘til Christmas or Thankful Heart for giving you the good old warm and fuzzies. Sure the film ties neatly into my childhood, but it also ties together two of my favourite things - Victorian-times and puppets, and the Muppets here take on a much more muted, less garish look than in their previous big-screen outings. The cuteness factor in this film is unrivalled. Gizmo is not a patch on Bean the carol singing Bunny, who is unbearably mistreated by Scrooge, then seen sleeping rough, shivering under a newspaper on that night-of-nights Christmas Eve. We have the hungry mouse family who take any opportunity to interject “no cheeses for us mices” into any song. And then there is Tiny Tim, a character who never fails to bring a tear to my eye (even in live-action interpretations of the tale), but whose plight is further enhanced by his diminutive amphibious stature. The scene where Kermit’s Bob Cratchit is moseying home with his ailing son perched on his shoulder, has to be one of the most bitter-sweet in any sentimental Christmas movie, and Tiny Tim’s absence from the future scene is just as traumatising as anything from Watership Down. Aside from sweet and cuddly Muppets, there are also some of the most comedic characters in any festive funny, including National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. There’s Marley & Marley the classic curmudgeons putting the frighteners on their old colleague Ebenezer; the fearful rat-clerks under Scrooge’s employ asking for a shovel of coal to warm them, and then screaming “Heatwave!” dressed for a luau when he refuses; our story-tellers Gonzo and Rizzo joining in with the penguins Christmas skating party; and the brief but rocking appearance from Animal and the band at Mr Fozziwig’s party. Plus, who could forget the singing horses and vegetables? As Rizzo notes, “never eat singing food.” The Muppet Christmas Carol never strays far too from Dickens’ original material, and we still get a sense of the cautionary tale, but reinvigorated by the colour and craziness of Jim Henson’s puppets. The film may have been beaten at the box-office back in1992 by Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, but Christmas movies are all about the replay value- and this has it by Santa’s sack-load. I could watch this over and over and never tire of coming back around to Tiny Tim’s joyful message at the end- “God bless us, everyone.”

"He's so mean, even the vegetables hate him!" I'm with you, Emily... the best by far. |

Already watched it once this season, and just had my brother on the phone (31) who wants to borrow it. I can't say a bad word about Die Hard, but Dickens' Christmas Carol was never better told than by a weird blue hand puppet. Is it wrong to get shivers as the Marleys are about to appear? If so, I don't wanna be right. Muppets are amazing. Bring on the Fraggles movie! |

I've watched this film every Christmas eve ever since it was first released on video. However, changes have been made between the original release and the DVD/TV version which is now available with the most obvious being the cutting of Belles song "When Love Is Gone" 1/2 way through the film. Pacing-wise its understandable as it slows the film to a crawl but its a pity because it, like the other song, is fantastic. |

It compares well with Christmas movies, but is a sad mistake when rated with muppet movies. This was Kermit & co's first outing after the death of the Great Jim Henson and it does show. Primarily by such lack of confidence in replacement performances that even the frog himself is reduced to a supporting role. The movies moved from being about muppets in a human world to humans in a muppet one, and our favorite characters now playing other characters, meaning all the witty characterisation that had been built over the twenty-odd years was ditched. This set a new precedent for ways to keep these guys on-screen without having to bother with any clever humor. The decline of the series into ridicule was set.
I haven't seen it for a while, but I don't think at any point Kermit even runs around screaming while flailing his arms in the air (on the other hand, if they'd got Michael Caine to do it, now that would have been a movie...!) |

Emily, may need to request you marry me for choosing this.* It too is my favouritest of Christmas movies, and upon watching it the other week on the big screen for the first time ever (university film club thing), found it makes me cry. Like five times. Only could the Muppets make you cry at the death of a small frog. Oh, spoiler alert.

It's just so wonderful! First time I saw it I was over 20 years old but loved it instantly. I still weep as a child every time I see the shivering rabbit trying to sleep, though |

It's in the singing of a street corner choir It's going home and getting warm by the fire It's true, wherever you find love it feels like Christmas
A cup of kindess that we share with another A sweet reunion with a friend or a brother In all the places you find love it feels like Christmas
It is the season of the heart A special time of caring The ways of love made clear It is the season of the sprit The message if we hear it Is make it last all year
It's in the giving of a gift to another A pair of mittens that were made by your mother It's all the ways that we show love that feel like Christmas
A part of childhood we'll always remember It is the summer of the soul in December Yes, when you do your best for love it feels like Christmas
It is the season of the heart A special time of caring The ways of love made clear It is the season of the sprit The message if we hear it Is make it last all year
It's in the singing of a street corner choir It's going home and getting warm by the fire It's true, wherever you find love it feels like Christmas It's true, wherever you find love it feels like Christmas
...what more could you want from a Christmas movie? |

Couldn't agree more! This is my absolutely favourite Christmas movie, I was devastated that I managed to miss it on TV this year. I ended up having to go out and buy it on Christmas Eve, I just couldn't be without it. At least now I can watch it every year, and multiple times too! |

Who knew that felt could make you cry? I always blubber at this movie. I disagree that Kermit's dimisnhed role shows a lack of convidence. The Muppets serve the story and the casting of each character is spot on. Kermit is the heart and sole of this picture as Bob. Expanding his role would have thrown the balance off, I think. |

i have been very lazy over xmas and not checked empire but i feel very strongly about the muppets so had to put my two cence in!! BEST XMAS FILM EVER! (I argue that Its a Wonderful Life can be watched all year!) first film my dad took me to pictures to see, so yes a certain amount of sentimentality goes with it but who doesnt love "if theres a prize for being mean the winner would be him" or Sam Eagle's "it is the American way....cough cough, i mean it is the British way!!" Classic. |

Fantastic Review! And Mycroft 3 I have to agree..Kermit's role was perfect as Bob...after all Bob Cratchett is the ..2nd..most famous character from A Christmas Carol! I get terribly sentimental every time I see this and end up wishing I was 10 again, love it and watch it every year. Also my favourite Michael Caine role, it was great casting to give him the Scrooge role. |

I love this film i think it is great film to watch at any time of the year. I only have one problem with said film and it is that the song " The love has gone" has gone from the film. That song was one, if not the, favourite songs from this movie. I mean it always made me cry like it made scrooge cry. i went to watch it recently with my friends was ready, heard the music begin, i prepared my self to sing and to my horror no song came. I sat there stunned, i remember stuttering something about where is the sad song gone to a room of confused faces (most of them had not had the joy of watching said movie) This then sparked an arguement with the one person who had seen it, all the way through at least, who said there never had been such a song within the film. I argued with her till blue in the face and then in anger go my laptop and showed her the soundtrack listing and there it was. I was vindicated and yet saddened that my favourite song had gone, this is the only problem i have with what was a perfect movie.
Does anyone else feel the same? Does anyone else know the song i speak of? Someone please tell me i'm not mad? |
