The Movie Drinking Games Too Dangerous To Attempt

Posted on Thursday January 16, 2014, 16:05 by Helen O'Hara in Empire States
The Movie Drinking Games Too Dangerous To Attempt

Titanic was on TV recently, and one thing leapt out: the number of times that the names "Jack" and "Rose" are said. I joked that you could build a drinking game around it, but then I watched a little further. In total, there are something like 130 mentions of both - particularly concentrated during the sinking, as you'd expect - and it seems like even the barest sip per mention would soon see you completely stocious (particularly if, as suggested by one Tweeter, you drank Jack Daniels when his name was mentioned and rosé for her). So please, please, do not try this at home*. But in a spirit of public awareness, the Empire team and I then brainstormed the other film drinking games that you should definitely not attempt.

We can't stress this enough. We're listing these as a joke. ON NO ACCOUNT attempt these.

National Treasure
They keep saying "Declaration Of Independence". Seriously, even if you've never noticed it before you will now hear it hundreds of times as you watch the film.

Fast & Furious Franchise
Mark every audible or visible gear change. Particularly in Tokyo Drift, there are a lot of them. Or alternatively for the later films, drink everytime someone says something that's less a real line of dialogue and more a cool one-liner they think they might want in the trailer.

The Terrence Malick Drinking Game
Drink whenever there is grass blowing in the wind on the screen. Kiss your liver goodbye.

Star Trek / Star Trek Into Darkness
Drink with every lens flare. Heck, even attempting this with water would be dangerous. A sibling of mine attempted this and flaked out about halfway through.

Transformers
Drink every time property, especially buildings, are damaged beyond repair.

Batman Begins
Have a shot someone mentions "fear" or a synonym thereof.

The Dark Knight
Drink any time anyone mentions "chaos", "order" or any variation thereon.

Shakespeare In Love
Take a drink every time someone in the film inspires a line or character in a Shakespeare play.

Anonymous
Take a drink every time something happens to make a Shakespeare fan furious with rage. Basically, drink through it. This one, in particular, you shouldn't do. Just watch Emmerich's other films and drink when something explodes instead.

Paranormal Activity Franchise
Sit beside a nervous person. Drink every time that they jump, quiver or cower.

South Park: Bigger, Longer, Uncut or The Wolf Of Wall Street
Drink the F-words.

Les Misérables
Drink every time a bad thing happens to a person. Drink twice as much if they sing about it.

So what are your suggestions for impossible and ill-advised movie drinking games? Post 'em below - and remember to drink responsibly!

*Please note: Empire does not condone the over-consumption of alcohol and this blog was written by a lifelong teetotaller. Perhaps you and your friends could have a fun AND healthy sit-up game, and perform exercise each time one of these things happen! Think of the toning that could result.

Also a Tarantino suggestion. Drink every time a shot is fired in inglourious boasters. There's also a good iron sky drinking game somewhere online.

How about the Breaking Bad drinking game: drink every time Walt tells a lie.

Damn, how many QT drinking games are there?
Me and my buds go with a two rule game:
1) Every time you hear the word foot or feet.
2) Every time there's a close up of people's feet - Drink twice for toes and cheer.
It will get you merry with every film bar Reservoir Dogs.

Yet another QT drinking game.. Watch Django Unchained and have a shot every time the 'n' word is used. Brutal!

Judge Dredd (1995) - drink for every mention of "the law". Essential in order to distract from Stallone's acting.

Zulu - drink for every use of the word "Zulu". Impossible.

The Thing (Original of Course!) Drinking Game - take a sip of your drink every time the thing is on screen - in disguise or not!

If you really want to spice things up and get alcohol poisoning, drink every time Kurt Russell has a beard.

Every time Sylvester Stallone looks confused and/or seems to have forgotten his scripted line

LOTR trilogy - drink every time someone says the word "ring" or anytime a ring is shown on screen. This is especially impossible in Fellowship of the Ring.

Boondock Saints- Drink every time the F-bomb is said. Also, don't see Boondock Saints. Terrible film.

I remember at university my friends and I decided to play a drinking game based around a film. Looking at my friend's DVD collection I saw that he had Gladiator - all we needed was to think of the prompts for drinking. I suggested we drink a finger (in other words, a gulp) of whatever we were drinking (I think beer) for every time someone said the words "the glory of Rome" (or variation on that theme) and two fingers (a larger gulp) for every occasion the word "Caesar" was used. We must have been drunk already because I managed to persuade my friends that those words didn't appear that often. Unsurprisingly, they were said quite a lot. We managed to get through the opening battle scene with no problems, but by the time we got to the first gladiatorial fight in North Africa the room was spinning, and there seemed to be two Russell Crowe's on screen. I don't think any of us made it to the moment when Maximus entered Rome but I think the Christians had an easier time taking on the lions in the Colisseum than we did taking on our ill-conceived drinking game.

Have attempted the Anchorman game... Had done a pint and a half before the opening montage had finished. Gave up! A drink for every time Ron is in a new suit nearly killed me.

Phonebooth: drink two large gulps every time you hear the gunman load his rifle.
OK - so its not that many times, but it is more than you might think... Enough to get you merry anyway.
How many times do you need to load a rifle? Does he just have the sound on a tape recorder, and just plays it down the phone to scare Colin Farrell every time he gets a bit cheeky, or what?
The classic one though: Castaway... drink 2 fingers every time you see the FedEx logo.

Pacific Rim: drink Jager every time they mention a Jaeger. The first 15 minutes are brutal but after that it plateaus quite nicely.

Having played far too many to admit, my fondest movie drinking game must be Dazed & Confused. Drink whenever someone says "Man". It is brutal but fun.

My friends and I created a Home Alone drinking game:
1 sip every time the Wet Bandits get injured
2 sips every time an injury to the Wet Bandits should see them hospitalised
3 sips every time the Wet Bandits sustain an injury that should kill them

This becomes especially tricky in Home Alone 2 with all those bricks to the face in quick succession :-)

@guzmaverick I remember(hazily) a LOTR based drinking game . You each take a member of the fellowship and each has a drink action.
every time Frodo falls over or takes out the ring
Sam says "Mr Frodo"
Legolas fires an arrow
Gimli strokes or mentions his beard
Gandalf touches his hat or offers sage advice
Boromir talks about Gondor

I can't recall the rest but it was many moons ago and I was Legolas, so I didn't even make it to the end of the movie!!
