There are many great things you can do with Lego: build spaceships; model a fortress for your hamster; stick pieces up your nose so that your mum has to take you to the hospital and then, again, inform you that you’re now 28 and it’s just not cute anymore. But, the best thing you can do with them, if you have a lot of time on your hands, is make movies.
The finest example I've seen recently of this particular micro-movie phenomenon is the Dark Knight trailer entirely constructed from themed plastic. You've probably seen it before, but it's worth watching again below.
This little bit of toy genius lead me on a time-wasting quest for the best Lego movies on the internet. And by 'internet' I mean 'Youtube'. I have narrowed it down to these five.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Even if it does cheat a bit by adding animation to the Lego faces, the choreography alone is really quite jazzy.
The Phantom Menace
The Duel of the Fates battle. I like when they do backflips.
Grainy as hell, but excellent use of changing heads. Really making the most of the medium there.
Someone really put the hours in on this one. My favourite part is when Darth Maul turns up. Good Lego 6-pack work too.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Unequivocally my favourite. This was even made before the existence of Indiana Jones Lego. The animation is spectacular and it even has a very amusing coda.
Got any better ones? Post the URL in the comments below.

Not got the link, cos I'm at work. But Eddie Izzard's "Death Star Canteen" sketch has been done with lego. It's kicking around on Youtube and is actually funnier than when Izzard did it.

I love these lego videos there the best. If search hard enough you can find lego versions of other films such as collateral on youtube.

The Dark Knight is easily the best and most likable, with the simple yet effective lego work. Holy Grail was good, but being animated made it less of an achievement in a way. Indiana Jones was funny and entertaining, but I'm pretty sure that that was just a low-brow take on the Indy Lego Game trailer. I dunno. A little more faith to the source material would have been nice. I don't know why Olly picked Phantom Menace or 300 as they are supremely boring, especially Phantom Menace. The bridge scene in particular is a bit stupid as you can see the light changing from shot to shot. Why would someone waste that much time? Good overall, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.

The Indiana Jones one was one of the sample movies that came with the Lego Studios program, along with Jurassic Park and some others. The batman one is the best by far. The phantom menace one's rubbish! My lego movies were better than that, it's so slooooowwww and the you can see the sets move.

They're all a lot of fun. Much like the Adam and Joe toy-mations (Toytanic, Tuffty Club, American Beautoy, Star Wars Episode 7: A Creeping Tedium) or the Riff-trax and Mystery Science Theater 3000 treatments, not to mention all the Simpsons, Family Guy and American Dad treatments. Done with affection for true fans of the movies.
