Forties Batman
In early 1938, Batman creator Bob Kane's first draft of the Caped Crusader envisaged a character clad in red tights, no gloves, a small domino mask and two stiff wings. Thankfully, uncredited co-creator Bill Finger suggested that the character be given a cowl, a cape, gloves and the costume be coloured a more ominous grey. The final result was the prototype for the iconic uniform we know and love today.
The finished article came to life with the 1943 serial, the first filmed appearances of Batman and Robin. The lack of a decent tailor on set meant that the costumes were ill-fitting - Batman's cowl was a particularly poorly cut article - and the presence of the Dynamic Duo's dangerously overstuffed codpieces proved to be a disconcerting distraction.
