The Acceptance Speech
"I accepted this honour because I thought it was about perspiration, a field in which I exceed but then I gave it a little thought and I have inspired my tailor many a time, the local pizza house and a couple of snipers who have tried many times to not let me make another movie, fortunately for me they failed.
"What is beautiful is to be here, and in any other award ceremonies where I've been blessed, in my own terms. I have never made a movie to please a group, to please the critics, to please a particular audience, I always think about me and my friends and the way they love cinema and I try to do the movies that way because to this day it is the movies that inspire us to make more of them.
"I would like to dedicate this award to my wife who inspires me and to This Is England which fucking rocked."

Then The Devil’s Backbone, a ‘personal’ Spanish ghost story, was balanced by a populist franchise assignment, Blade II. Now, after comic-book picture Hellboy, Del Toro has delivered a more-than-worthy companion piece to his earlier Spanish film — indeed, this is his masterpiece to date, establishing him among the best filmmakers currently working at the top of their game.
