Best Sci-fi / Fantasy Pan's Labyrinth
It's fair to say that most people who've seen Guillermo Del Toro's fantasy masterpiece have taken the movie straight to their hearts. The Mexican director's skewed look at the Spanish Civil War, as seen through the eyes of the young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), peers into an unexplored, fairy-tale world of danger, delight and hope. Singular in its vision, and enchantingly realised on screen, the movie floats between the brutal realities of 1940s Spain and with riveting results. The fact that so many images from the film have already reached iconic status is testament to Pan's Labyrinth's irresistible power.
