Best Actress Penélope Cruz Volver
When you see "A Film By Almodóvar" and "Penélope Cruz" roll across the screen, you can be sure that heads will turn and tongues will wag. Volver was no exception to the rule and Cruz's central performance as voluptuous housewife and mother Raimunda, proved to be a revelation. Exuding passion, vulnerability and a total, overwhelming command of the role, Cruz delivered the best performance of her career so far and gave Almodóvar's movie a warm, radiating centre. The Academy may have voted for the other lady, but Empire's readers have firmly put Cruz on top.
