Official Star Wars: Episode VII Casting Announced
Confirmation at last of Ford, Hamill, Fisher, Driver and the main cast

30 April 2014  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Star Wars

submit to reddit

We have endured months of rumours, speculation and wild guesswork about the likely faces in our forthcoming return to a galaxy far, far away. Well, the official casting press release of Star Wars: Episode VII has arrived at last, and with it the names of the principal cast - albeit with no character details as yet. Here it is in full for you below.

"The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

"Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker in the new film.

"Director J.J. Abrams says, 'We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.'

"Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015."

The return of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will come as no surprise, of course, since the first three and Mayhew had already been widely rumoured to be aboard. And of course it's hard to imagine a Star Wars film without Daniels, Baker and their iconic characters. Likewise, Attack The Block's John Boyega and Girls' Adam Driver had both been strongly rumoured for some time.

Inside Llewyn Davis star Oscar Isaac only arrived on the rumour treadmill this morning (did that report prompt this announcement? Or was it long planned?), while Andy Serkis and Domhnall Gleeson are surprises, albeit two thoroughly welcome ones. Will Andy Serkis act in person or in a mo-cap suit? Start guessing in the comment box below...

Daisy Ridley’s is probably the least well-known name in the ensemble. According to her agency profile, no doubt glowing hot from tabloid types looking for a scoop, she’s 5’ 7”, has hazel eyes and plays between 16 and 20. She has TV work on her CV (Silent Witness, Mr. Selfridge, Casualty and Toast Of London) and also has the next Inbetweeners movie on her schedule. You can check out her showreel here. Chalk her up as a Person Of Immediate Interest to all fans, and indeed anyone looking for a next big thing.

And, as an update, The Hollywood Reporter has heard that there is at least one more female character still to be cast

Star Wars: Episode VII hits screens on December 18, 2015, and we'll be following it every step of the way between now and then (if you're dying of anticipation, try guessing the film's subtitle here). Following the table read shown above, Abrams' film starts shooting any day now. We're as excited as a Wookiee on Life Day Eve.

That kids face
That stretched face big ears guy is no way gonna play a human. He can barely pull it off without make up. Tinnie Tempah; Ming the merciless, Ron Weasley and Gollem are all good choices. Ive never heard of that jailbait chic, that generic handsom face guy or Rob Brydons dads face on a baby. Also where is Warrick Davis. And Benderdict Fassenbunch hasnt been announced yet but hes obviously going to be in it because hes in everything from now on. More

RE: Star Wars: Episode VII Casting Announced
Lets see..... Old washed up actors, most of whom are not particularly good - check Crappy young actors who've never done anything good or been in anything good - check Andy Serkis in a mo-cap role - check (only good thing so far) Awful fanfiction script by people who don't get Star Wars - check Ruining Lucas's legacy of being at the cutting edge of filmmaking technology to appeal to mouthbreating man-boy "fans" - check This deal is getting worse all the time! Oh for the days w More

RE: They better treat Luke Skywalker with the love and care he deserves!
If they're going to replicate the original movies, then surely Billy Dee Williams will join for Episode VIII. They've got to keep some treats back. As for Denis Lawson, he ought to come back (and hopefully will), but my guess is that the actors announced will form the core of the main narrative over the next three films. Wedge was always a peripheral character. Much loved, but peripheral. Now, whilst I know there isn't a huge amount of love for Episodes I-III (which I personally really enj More

.
My guess would be Daisy Ridley is Han and Leia's daughter, Adam Driver is Luke's apprentice who will turn dark over the course of the trilogy. Von Sydow and Gleeson are connected somehow, I had a random thought that they could be playing versions of Obi Wan (Sydow filling in for Guinness) due to both having some physical similarities with Guinness and McGregor. But no idea how this would fit in with anything. Boyega and Isaacs are possibly the new Han Solo types, with Serkis as a mo-cap alien. More

My bet: Domnall Gleeson will be Luke's son..
...or possibly Like and Leia's. In any case, I predict he'll be the central Jedi who's quest forms the backbone of the next here films' story. It's the Star Wars way. One to three (shudder) were about Anakin, four to six about Luke so It follows that seven to nine will be about his successor. More

They better treat Luke Skywalker with the love and care he deserves!
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant - feels like REAL Star Wars now Mark Hamill is in it (and Carrie Fisher, of course! Still, officially, the most beautiful woman in the universe!!!)... ...but where are Billy Dee Williams and Denis Lawson?!!! More

While I am a little sad there is no John Noble...
... how can anyone not get excited by that cast announcement? While there are no guarantees this will be a fantastic film, and it will no doubt have its detractors whatever the end result, I am looking forward to this very much. More

L: Karl Crutchley Oo oo can we start speculating on who will be who now? If they even loosely borrow from the EU I can see Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley as Jacen & Jaina. And the plot? Solo dies, Jacen blames Skywalker and turns to the dark side. ts been widely reported that new films will be following a new story and effectively rendering the EU novels redundant. Also,Adam Driver was rumoured to be playing a/the villain. Such a stupidly big grin on my face :-)
The list is just fantastic. Love the nod to Flash with Max von Sydow who is utterly brilliant as an actor too. Expect Serkis to do something amazing mo-cap. Excellent young and brilliant actors. All the original cast back!! What's not to love and be all kinds of excited about? One or two might need a few less pies though ;-) More

Serkis? von Sydow? Tell Me More...
I really hope Serkis is in-camera. As much as I like his mo-cap work, he deserves an in-the-flesh role here. As for Max von Sydow, well, if it turns out he's playing Ming once again (Lucas was inspired to write Star Wars by Universal not giving him the rights to Flash Gordon, and we never did find out who picked up that ring at the end of the 1980 classic, did we!) I think I'll explode! More
