Christopher Nolan Goes Interstellar
He's in talks for the sci-fi script

10 January 2013  |  Written by James White  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Christopher Nolan

Here’s a turn up for the books – albeit not 100% shocking given the writer. On the day that Steven Spielberg put Robopocalypse into limbo because of script issues, another of the sci-fi projects he was once considering, Interstellar, has a new man in charge. Christopher Nolan is now in negotiations to make it his follow-up to The Dark Knight Rises.

Written by Jonathan Nolan – AKA Chris’ brother – the complex script is based on theories from Caltech astrophysicist Kip Thorne and involves both time travel and alternate dimensions accessible via wormhole.

Given that one and now likely two Nolans are involved, everything else is still shrouded in mystery, though it appears the script has undergone significant re-writes since Spielberg’s plans to make it around 2007.

Paramount has the rights, but any Nolan film would be a co-production with Warner Bros., where the director’s Syncopy company is set up. Right now, there’s no solid schedule for shooting as a final deal isn’t yet in place, but given how closely the Nolan siblings have worked together in the past, and the project’s compelling narrative, we’re keeping our fingers crossed it all works out. Because let’s face it: Chris Nolan making hard sci-fi? Yes, please…

Well, maybe not all a mystery...
"Given that one and now likely two Nolans are involved, everything else is still shrouded in mystery..." Except that, quite possibly, a lot of the cast from 'Inception' might show up. My money's on Michael Caine, even if he just stands in the background and has one line. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same movie again. More

I was wondering what became of INTERSTELLAR
And I'm glad to hear that it's still wondering around in Development. While I'm kind of intrigued to see what Steven Spielberg's take would have been like, I'm sure that Christopher Nolan will do a brilliant job on this, considering that it's main point is the complex and multi-layered story, one of Nolan's trademarks. Let's keep our fingers cross for this in the coming months, and when it gets made, it will hopefully be another blockbuster made for grown-ups to watch as well as teenagers. More

Can't wait to see Nolan go Interstellar. A full-on Nolan space opera with laser cannons blazing would be really something. And yes, I am an unapologetic Nolan fanboy (a derogatory badge I wear with pride), though not I hope an unenlightened or uncritical one. And I'll tell you why. Smart, grown-up and not afraid of real emotion, he is the action director I've been waiting my whole life for. I will always be interested in a new Nolan film, but I find time travel such a dull and overused concept (one of the reasons I'v yet to see Looper) The big sci-fi to keep an eye on is still Elysium for me, and I'd honestly rather see Nolan take on a slightly different genre and what thrill do people get in constantly derailing threads? Yes, it’s possible to not like some of his films or even think he’s over-rated, but you still have to give him some credit for trying to make decent, intelligent, emotion and story driven films. In these days of CGI explosion-fests with paper thin characters, it’s churlish to pull someone up for trying to be better and respecting you as a viewer. I'm always up for a bit of intelligent sci-fi and this looks like it could be very interesting. I just hope that Nolan doesn't get carried away with the running time (he really needs a stricter editor these days) and I hope he doesn't try to cram as much plot and exposition as he can into the film.
