Terrence Malick's To The Wonder Trailer
Affleck, McAdams and Kurylenko star

20 December 2012  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen

Terrence Malick's new film To The Wonder asks Ben Affleck to chose between a Bond girl and The Time Traveler's Wife. It's a tough pick by any standards. Luckily, he's got Javier Bardem to help him with the kind of gravelly-toned advice and spiritual nuggets that illuminate this new trailer for the movie.

Affleck plays Neil, a midwesterner whose love for a beautiful French woman named Marina (Olga Kurylenko) is initially as pure and blissful as the Oklahoma landscape it plays out against. Then that loves fades, Marina's personal circumstances take a turn for the worse and Rachel McAdams' Jane turns up with simpler pleasures (hey, it's tough to compete with bison watching) and aliens turn up and vaporise everyone man's inner nature is exposed.

Bardem's Father Quintana, a man plagued with doubts of his own, is on hand to offer spiritual guidance. The film polarised festivalgoers in Venice, but we're as excited as always with a Malick release. Expect more wonderment as well as striking images of Mont St. Michel and lush bucolia to rival Days Of Heaven. It's out on February 22.

RE: Wow
L: UTB L: Fit Kisto Some of the festival reviews have suggested that this is Malick teetering dangerously close to self-parody. It does seem to be happening slowly but surely... Whilst the imagery and performances of all of his films are stunning, the whispering is getting a bit tedious. Still, will give it a go. agree, and in some ways the trailer put me slightly off this forthcoming film. But I'll check out the reviews once its out. More

RE: Wow
tbh, after looking at the trailer that was my immediate thoughts. The Thin red line still has to be one of my all time greats, Tree of life was just a slog though. More

Some of the festival reviews have suggested that this is Malick teetering dangerously close to self-parody. I don't want this to be true, but the umpteenth shot of an erethral spinning woman doesn't look very encouraging. More

Father Quintana?
Hard to take a character with that surname seriously since The Big Lebowski... More

Beautiful, no doubt ... but will I care?
Personally, Tree of Life left me very cold. I didn't care about the characters at all, although I thought it was visually breathtaking and had fine performances. Malick's insistence of connecting the smallest details of human life to the unfathomable machinations of the universe (Tree of Life, The New World and Thin Red Line all do this to some extent) creates a conflict, not a harmony, of character and setting. His arena is infinite, so I can't see how his characters can do anything but become More

Looks great. I loved the Tree Of Life and there's little doubt that this will be equally as beautiful. And who saw Ben Affleck one day ending up in a Mallick film? Not I! More
