Comic-Con: Godzilla Poster Stomps Online
Gareth Edwards will unleash the beast

15 July 2012  |  Written by James White

If you follow Empire on Twitter, you’ll already know that we spent part of the day in Hall H at Comic-Con at the Warner Bros. panel where Peter Jackson unveiled some new Hobbit footage, Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell laughed it up with The Campaign, Zach Snyder debuted a first look at Man Of Steel and Guillermo del Toro unveiled Pacific Rim, which features more giant robots fighting giant monsters action than you can shake a giant stick at. But there was one, unannounced surprise arrival: Gareth Edwards, bringing a teaser for Godzilla.

That teaser was stunning, starting off with a series of destroyed buildings in an empty, devastated city, with cars and wreckage everywhere. Then, in an incredibly bold move, Edwards shows his monster, panning up its scaly, spiny back as it turns to the camera and roars that classic Gojira roar.

That Edwards was even prepping a teaser was a huge revelation to all; that it would be so visually astounding an even bigger one. Edwards looked taken aback by the reaction to the trailer, which he's been working on for two years, and confessed that he was on the verge of tears. But his gambit worked: this has been the surprise hit of the Con, and there's no doubt that Godzilla is now high on people's most wanted lists.

Edwards may show the monster in the teaser, but the new poster that has hit the web does not. Still, it's worth a look.

It’s a very simple teaser image, with nothing more than a mention of Edwards and the Japanese letters for the beast’s name, but it’s definitely something to get fans excited. Edwards, of course, got the gig in January 2011 post-Monsters and has, since then, been working hard on bringing Godzilla to life. It’s been through a couple of different writers, but these new announcements have us hopeful that Warners and Legendary have a lot of confidence in the team bringing it to life.

Have People Forgotten How Bad "Monsters" Was?
Gareth Edwards...Gareth Edwards...after watching Monsters (biggest waste of time ever), that name to me has become synonymous with "pretentious", "boring" and "talentless" - was I too harsh with my comment there? I hope so. More
